TV dvd to PC - Luna - 10-18-2006

Is it possible to hook up a dvd player (the ones you hook up to your average television) to a computer?

I've been searching online but I might not have my terminology correct so I can't find what I'm looking for.

What I want to do is rip some clips of some dvds and possibly get on the pc some home movies (no, not pornos) from an old vhs tape. The dvd player I have has a vhs player in it as well.

My only other idea of doing this was to hook up my dv cam and record it directly from the tv (?) and then put it on my pc, but if there is a way to hook up my dvd/vhs player to the pc and rip clips I would be cutting out a bunch of unnecessary steps.

Has anybody done this? Can you give me any advice?

I dont know the specifics, but it would be easier to just rip the DVD on your PC as opposed to hooking up an external one - assuming you have a DVD drive on your PC. If you dont, go buy one theyre like $40.

Otherwise youre gonna need whats called a 'capture card' and you'll need to install it & run the audio & video feeds from your dvd/vhs player into it, and proceed to do as you want.

I tried to run a TV feed to my PC years ago & the card's drivers really fucked my PC up so I havent bothered to try again since, but I'm guessing it's gotten easier & better to do today.

Ok, I just got a new pc a few months ago and it has a capture card and all that stuff. I am 100% sure I have all the hardware.

I have a dvd player in the pc (yes, of course) but how the hell do I rip the dvd? My dvd software has no option for it. I have Adobe Premiere Elements, too... so I do have some capture software, but I can't figure out how to rip the dvd to the pc.

I'll defer dvd rippers to the pros, I used something called Ulead but I only did it once and I did the entire dvd (not selected scenes).

I would use the PC's dvd drive for that, and run the VHS signal to the capture card and save the entire tape digitally, then manipulate the digital file however you want/need to.

Google is usually helpful in these instances also.

nero has a capture option i think

ok, cool... I'll check that out.

Alot of people have said to get the Pinnacle software and firewire. I'm willing to do that.

- Goatweed - 10-18-2006

firewire would be perfect for your dv cam, but unless your dvd/vhs has that output you wont be able to use that cable.

I'm totally expecting diaper pic s & video now, btw.

dvd decrypter to get the vob files on your computer.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/">http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/</a><!-- m -->

then it gets tricky from there cause alot of software you have to pay to convert from vob to avi or mpeg.
but, i think i found this. never used it before but there is a tutorial.

that should be all you need

omg. THANK YOU.

I had a feeling I was getting my terminology wrong.

- Ronin - 10-19-2006

don't use dvd decrypter.. it's obsolete since it was bought out..

use dvdfab decrypter.. this one is better and newer.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DVDFab_Decrypter.htm">http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DVD ... rypter.htm</a><!-- m -->

then you could use voblanker only if you have trouble burning the dvd. some dvds are coming with alot of security. this will help.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/voblanker.cfm">http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video ... lanker.cfm</a><!-- m -->

then you use DVD Shrink to compress the movies (or the files that were ripped from dvdfab decrypter) onto a 4.7 GB dvd.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html">http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html</a><!-- m -->

there are tutorials for all this software.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://dvdshrink.info/guides.php">http://dvdshrink.info/guides.php</a><!-- m -->
this page is very good because the tutorials are animated and easy to follow.

if you need help, just let me know.

if you want to convert the movie to a VCD (a movie that fits onto a CD) rather than a DVD, i have the software for that too. I forget what it's called though.

- HedCold - 10-19-2006

it was bought out? i thought the courts ruled it illegal

- Ronin - 10-19-2006

i dunno about that but i just tried it on a movie and it didn't work. someone suggested dvdfab decrypter because dvd decrypter hasn't been updated with the latest securities. probably blaming it on the buy out / court stuff. but dvdfab worked like a charm.

- Luna - 10-19-2006

thanks Ronin. I will check these links out later tonight.

I did download dvdripperPlus, but I didn't install it yet.

again, thanks for the advice.

- Ronin - 10-19-2006

no problem Luna..

could i get that nekkid picture of you now?

- HedCold - 10-19-2006

yea they stopped working on dvddecryptor because of a court ruling. i still use it because i mostly use it for burning an iso, not ripping dvds, so i haven't had any problems come up

- Ronin - 10-19-2006

oh, ok..

and the movie i was burning was Curious George. alot of people were having trouble with that movie.

- GonzoStyle - 10-19-2006

if you wanna rip a dvd to avi or mpeg, or to just get a clip.

best software is AOA dvd ripper. Look for it on torrents, get the one with the crack. I can send you the crack if anything, so you dont pay the 35 bucks or whatever it is.

It's really simple once you configure it the first time.

As far as just ripping a dvd to make a copy, I use either nero or dvd decrypter if its copy protected.

- Ronin - 10-19-2006

i think i tried AOA but it gave me problems..

- GonzoStyle - 10-19-2006

I ripped a couple dvds yesterday with no issues, I use version 4.0.1, maybe the others had an issue but mine works great.

I still have the .rar file with the program installer and the crack for it.

The only thing you need is to properly set it up, which can be a tad confusing. But I have a great set of instructions. Takes maybe 10 minutes to set up and you only do it once and then it takes less than a minute to set up to rip a dvd every time after.

- Ronin - 10-19-2006

does it let you take snippets of the dvd movie?
