my modem isn't working for some reason. the computer initializes it but when it goes to dial it doesn't pick up the dial tone.
there is definitly a working phone line because i put a phone on it to test it.
i already tried installing the drivers over and over again and that didn't work
i also tried setting it up for different com ports but that didn't work, its supposed to be working on com3
any other suggestions besides just getting a new modem?

Usually if the computer will recognize it and it still won't get a dial tone it is a bad modem. Notice how I said usually though. It is not always the case but is the norm. The best way to find out is take the modem to a friends computer and put it in and see if it works. Otherwise just buy a new one. You can pick up a nice little lucent winmodem at any CompUSA for about 30 bucks.

A winmodem is a modem that is software-based and it just isn't as efficent. Hardware modems are the way to go.

Also, if you haven't already tried this, move the modem to a different PCI slot (assuming you have a free one to move it to). Sometimes the COM settings get fucked and you have to reseat the card in a different slot. If that doesn't work I would uninstall it from your machine via the control panel, go buy a good hardware based one and install it. You should be good to go after that. But try swapping it first, don't spend money if you don't have to.
