Thanks Goochy.
Spinks defeated a then 48-0 Holmes but spinks was a light heavyweight champion. Roy jones began his reign as a middle weight champion. Jones is the first man to hold middle weight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight titles in history, on that he is alone. He is only the second man and the 1st in a 106 years to win a heavyweight title after being a middleweight champion.
You can say that jones hasn't fought anyone since james toney. That in essence may be true that he has no been challanged but no one can challange him, therein lies the problem. He is too good for his own Damn good. He has beaten worthy opponents which would be great accomplishments for any other champion in his division. Yet he makes them look so bad that people forget that they were legitamite competitors.
Yes in the last 3 years or so he has faced a bunch of tomato cans but what else can he do? He cleaned out the division. Any fighter will have half or probably 3/4's of his record be less than worthy or journeymen challangers. A champion is defined usually by 3-6 fights, some just one. Ali and Robinson were exceptions but no one touches Ali and Robinson. Remember Joe Louis' "Bum of the Month Club". Who did Marciano beat in his career that wasn't over the hill?
People blame him for ducking, when in honesty he does not. He had a contract signed and sealed for Hopkins to accept but hopkins wanted more money. Which is ridiculous cause he woulda made double his biggest pay day. Darius Michaelschewski fought a life and death battle with montell griffith and eric harding as well as tarver. Darius wouldn't even be a consideration if not for his glossy record. Darius knows Jones will beat him easily and understands he will gain and attain fame for a longer time if he doesn't fight jones, cause if he does and gets beat then there are no more concerns about him.
If Darius Michaelschewski is so good, how come he has never had a televised fight in america? Think about that.
Yes jones beat a tomato can of a heavyweight but he beat a heavyweight champion. He outclassed a man who beat holyfield and several other good heavyweights. He did it and nothing can take that away, he has no challangers and went out looking for one. To expect him to fight lewis is ridiculous. Like the point has been made, when spinks fought holmes the weight difference was under 20 pounds and spinks was 6' 2" tall and a naturally bigger man struggling to make low weights.
Before spinks it was Bob foster who fought heavyweights weighing around 200-210 pounds. You can't expect in an era of 6' 6" and 250 pound heavyweights for Jones to even try.
Just look at some of the names on Jones resume.
Bernard Hopkins
James Toney
Vinny Pazienza
Mike McCallum
Virgil Hill
Reggie Johnson
David Telesco
Eric Harding
Derrick Harmon
and now John Ruiz.
He has fought and defeated everyone in the top 10 today except for Tarver.
Jones knows deep down he couldn't take tyson, he might have a chance by frustrating tyson but he wouldn't take the chance on tyson hitting him cleanly. Notice how jones immediatly held when Ruiz rushed him, that's how tyson fights. Jones would have to back Tyson up and he doesn't have the power nor weight to do so. Tyson would fight him rushing in all night, plus tyson is Jones height so jones would have a tough night ducking him.
Tysons problems lie with tall heavyweights, he can't punch up. But facing people under 6' 4" he is a monster still.
