NEW YORK - Shortly after Jay-Z took the stage for his final hometown performance on "The Best of Both Worlds" tour — now down to just one world after the acrimonious departure of co-headliner R. Kelly — the sound of a gunshot boomed out.

Just in case any of the 25,000-plus fans inside Madison Square Garden on Monday night didn't realize it was a sound effect, Jay-Z calmly intoned: "Everybody, you O.K., you safe — THERE ARE NO GUNS IN THE BUILDING!"

With that not-so-subtle dig at Kelly, who bolted from the same stage last Friday after claiming he saw two audience members waving guns, Jay-Z managed to make the "Pied Piper of R&B" an afterthought at the concert where he was supposed to be the main attraction.

At the same time, the spectacular show cemented Jay-Z's status as rap's revered king. Not only for his deft skill at entertaining his loyal subjects, but for his formidable ability to call on his royal court — an all-star cast of about 18 performers, including P. Diddy, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip and Pharrell.

"One monkey don't stop a show, I'll tell ya," Jay-Z boasted at the top of the concert. "We're going to have even more fun tonight!"
