it depends largely on what rate you set when you rip the music - most of the ad stats are based on music ripped at 128 kb/s, I like my stuff to be at 192 or 224 - it sounds less tinny & more 'fuller'. The files are therefore larger and less longs would be able to be stored.
my last player was 40 gig and my new one is 30 gig & with 2 movies on it, I've got 325 cd's and I've got about half the space used up.
I use mine in the car, at work, etc. so I like haveing most of my cd's available when I need them - if you only plan on using it occassionally one of those nano things (or a similar non-apple product) would probably suit you fine.
