Even if you thought Gollum looked a little fake, you have to admit the way the interaction with the characters worked was awesome. To take the Jar Jar example, it always annoyed me because it was so obvious that characters were talking to a blank screen, always sort of forcing out their lines, but Gollum seemed to fit into the movie, rather than pasted in.
