I love him. He's like those happy old people who become known for sitting by the side of a busy street and waving to passing cars. People drive by regularly and beep just to see him and get him to wave to them.
That's just like our Arpi... except he doesn't wave or anything. He just says mean things to you.

I've been investing since October of '98. I was able to partake the in the extreme highs of '99, but unforunately didn't sell much as it took a freefall last year.
If you are going to start an investment is realize that you're doing it for the long term and not hoping to triple your money in a year.
#1 thing to do: Set up a Roth IRA (assuming you make less than $100k) which grows tax-free for life. You can't take it out until you are 58 1/2 (there are some things you can take it out for, but I won't get into that) but if you assume the average return of the market over the last 60 years (12%) your maximum $2,000 investment will double every six years (rule of 72 for you finance folks) and by the time you're ready to retire, it will be worth over $130,000. Invest as much as you can up to the maximum of $2,000 every year, and you will have a sizeable chunk of tax-free cash come retirement time.
Within Roth IRA accounts you can purchase any investment, fund, etc that you would normally be able to purchase, this is just a cool retirement gimick that was started a few years ago. In investing, the most important thing you have on your side is time.

Snuka, are you looking for some quick profit or a long term investment for retirement?
Shortly after 9/11, the market was at a serious low, so I bought some big name stocks at the lowest they've been in over a year. They went up, but still haven't gotten back to their normal average price. So, what I thought was going to be a short-term (3 or 4 month) investment will take a bit longer. Only made about 10-15% on what I put in so far. Expect to double my initial investment when the stocks go back up to where they belong when the economy recovers.
As for long term, I have a 401K account. Mine is from my company, but you can start your own. You get to select from a field of mutual funds with different types of stock and risk rating. Your select your funds, and what percentage of your cintribution goes into each. Then, just have a piece of your paycheck, like 4-10% sent directly into your 401K PRE-TAX.
For someone in there mid twenties, the usual advice is to put about 10% of your contribution into a bond fund which is very safe, and then spread out the rest over two or three stock funds of different risk levels.
If you talk to one of the companies that runs 401K's, like Fidelity, Merryl Lynch, etc. they will assign you an advisor who will explain the whole procedure and what the different funds are.
Edit - Another benefit of a 401K, is that you can borrow money from it, and any interest you pay on the loan goes into your 401K! Your always approved, because it's your money, and you pay back YOURSELF every cent including the interest.

I just got the fuckin douche chills. What the fuck is this world coming to? Not only that, but this is the third forum it has been in. It was moved TWICE - First to the trailer park, then to the pit. I think Jimmah is movin' on up!
I have never seen that happen on any message board.

Anyhoo...
I'm what you might call a daytrader. I invest in some blue chip stocks but most of my action is buying and selling penny stocks and selling them on .50 to 1.00 swings. I've been fairly successful (except for the Enron mess) and its a fun way to get some gambling in at work between projects.

I had a great 401K till about a year and a half a go. I'm young, so I was risky and had my entire portfolio in stock. Oops! Yeah. My 401K went from 58K to 16K in an eight month span.
Investing??? I put 10 percent of my pay a week into a stock purchase program which gives you 15% of the purchase price. Lucent is trading a 5 bucks right now...2 years a go it was at 88, so I'm getting about 20 shares every week. The only other stocks I own are NCR and AT&T and they too have seen bad times of late. But I'm not looking to do anything with this money for atleast 3 more years so I'll sit and wait....I've got time.

My 401k got hit too, but, in the very longterm, it'll be alright. If it's aggressive you got to sit out the long falls as well as the big highs. But, I learned by the tech stock crash, that don't put your eggs in one basket.

One of the important things to remember when investing is that you don't actually lose or gain any money until you sell out. The biggest mistake I see people making is that they panic when they see their stock prices drop, and they bail out at the worst possible time. You have to understand that sometimes the stock price does drop based on conditions outside of the companys control, but if you have picked a good solid stock, the company shouild be able to bounce back, and you will not lose anything in the long run.
Another important thing to remember when you're starting out investing is not to invest anything you can't afford to live without. You don't want to be forced to sell your stocks at a bad time because you need the money to pay your bills.

Ok this is almost a first as well. me posting on here when im home and not at work.
Thanks for all the helpfull info!
My talents far exceed what you all can realize. Even a serious topic that i created here cause some sort of defilement. As slashy said. No thread ever has been moved around as much. To me that equals DEFILEMENT!! So I got good advise from people who think I am a disgusting deliquent. Have a thread deemed to be serious. And had a thread moved so it has now been in three forums. Had Spit realize a soft spot for me. Having Sean think the world is coming to an end. And actually having maynard think he is funny.
It just may be true. THAT I AM SATAN!!! :burnfucker:
Like ps....
Like amy uhhh like HI :p
