Personally I never watched it before my wife started to during season 4. The tryout shows are the best because they show you maybe a couple of good singers that they are going to "push" when the eventual competition starts up but mostly just the really bad singers that make you want to cringe and laugh out loud at how bad they really are. It's quite entertaining. Then they go to L.A. get taken down to 12 and the competition starts. It's not a horrible show as compared to some of the other 'reality' shows on television. Inevitably, if you watch, you gravitate towards a certain singer due to voice, personality, looks. Season 4 I could tell Carrie Underwood had the goods and 5 Million copies of her debut album sold later, it seems she is. Last year wasn't really that into it since there was no one who captured my attention, other than kelli pickler who was just hot and stupid, which was enough.
