Sorry sleeper, I had to do it.
I think the proper phrase is "I couldn't care less." But, it seems that people in the Northeast say "I could care less" more often than not.
Which way is correct (in your mind)?

though they have different meanings, either one can be correct. If you use "could", that means it is possible for you to care less than you do, however that still doesn't mean you care a lot. If you say you "couldn't", that means it is not possible for you to care less, which is not true in most cases. Because there will always be things I care less about.

But, how is it derogatory to say, "I could care less". Whereas when you say, "I couldn't care less", it is implied that as little as you care, it would be impossible to care any less. Of course, this entire "argument" is based in semantics. I just wanted to hear some opinions.

Is it just me, or has this been discussed before?

It's been discussed before, but at least it's not another thread about maynard, arpi, or ken's pen.

It's assumed that you still don't care a lot. I don't think anyone would take that statement and put a positive connotation on it. However, you still leave the space open for other things that you do care less about.
