If I have no bags to check in, how early should I get there? The only shuttle service by me gets there exactly one hour before my plane will depart -- is that enough time?
If I decide not to take a shuttle, do any of you have suggestions on parking? I won't be getting in home again until almost midnight...

Which airline are you taking? I'm asking because I know with some Continental you can check-in to a computer terminal. You would need a credit card as ID. You would still have to stand in line through the security scanners. Your best bet is to call your airline and ask them about all this.

If you have a printed itinerary, go straight to the gate and get ticketed at the gate. You will need either an itinerary or boarding pass to get through security. I got to the airport 20 minutes before my flight last week and boarded just fine. An hour will be plenty as long as you do not check in at the counter downstairs.
If you decide to drive, park at the hilton across from the airport on 1&9 south. Take the shuttle from the parking garage and it will drop you off at the tram stop. Take the tram to your terminal which will be Terminal C.

Friday, flight leaves at 8:55 AM ...shuttle gets in at 7:50

Long term parking at Newark has regular shuttle service to/from the terminals that run at all hours.
I think it costs @$10 per day for parking.
