The GT or the base? The reason I ask this is because even thuoght the GT has 180 HP, you gotta rev the engine up to about 6-7k rpm to get it. You also cant get the 17 inch rims with the moonroof nor can you get all wheel drive on the GT package.

As for the Escape, stay away from Fords at all costs.

You really can't go that wrong with a Hyundai of any sort. The engines were redone a couple of years ago by Roger Penske and are guaranteed for 100,000 miles. Those familiar with racing know the name penske, so if he's doing the engines, you know they have to be good. The warranty is one of the best, if not the best, in the industry today. Free roadside assistance for 5 years, Powertrain warranty is awesome and the cars aren't as expensive as Hondas. We just bought a 2003 Hyundai Elantra GLS for 15k a couple of months ago and have absolutely no complaints with it whatsoever. The dealership that sold it to us, Difeo, are a bunch of fucking assholes, but the car is golden. I highly reccommend them if you are in the market for a new car.
