I love him. He's like those happy old people who become known for sitting by the side of a busy street and waving to passing cars. People drive by regularly and beep just to see him and get him to wave to them.
That's just like our Arpi... except he doesn't wave or anything. He just says mean things to you.

how old was the previous pope when he was elected? just seems weird to me to pick such an old guy, unless they really like going through this process because it makes them feel important or something
Of course it seems weird to you. You're 21, you've only known of one pope for your entire life.
Pope John Paul II was in his 50's when he was elected, and that was unusual. Why did they choose such a young pope last time? Well, think about what happened to Pope John Paul I. He went and pulled a William H Harrison on the Church.
While it's all well and good that there a new pope, is it really going to affect the way any Catholic lives their lives? I don't think so. The message is still the same, the mass is still the same. I don't know why so many non-Catholics give a shit, or attempt to express their own half-assed opinion on what they think a Pope should be. You'll never meet the Pope, he's gonna make a few trips to the US, and that's it. If you can't even name the diocese you belong to, then you should just be quiet, and go back to your secular humanist lifestyles. Americans are too used to have so many organizations willing to coddle them, and support whatever opinions they have, so that, when it comes to dealing with something like the Roman Catholic Church, they feel they should be able to pick and choose which parts they like, and which parts they don't like, and yet still be recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. If you really want to make a statement about homosexuality, abortion, marriage in the priesthood, then get yourself ex-communicated. Get a formal declaration from the church that they have disowned you.
Everyone wants to be part of the club, but they don't want to play by the clubs rules. Too fucking bad, go become a seventh day adventist or some other dumbass protestant faith, go and be yelled at by fundamentalist wackos who take the Bible word for word.

i love the fundamentalists, i really do. this semester, i'm taking a religion course(need two for core) on the gospels, specifically the synoptic problem. most of what we do is go around discussing parts where two gospels are in direct conflict with each other, like how the main part of matthew(the sermon on the mount) doesnt exist in mark or john, and is split up and scattered around luke, or the two geneologys of jesus that share a total of four names

why do you care about who is president?
The pope has a hell of a lot more control over how the church is run than what the president has about any single issue involving this country.
It's not like the Church is dealing with my fucking healthcare or social security. What exactly does he have control over that affects my life as a Catholic in any way? The actual running of the church is for priests, and clergy men to deal with, it's behind the scenes, broken down to the cardinals, the bishops, the priests, brothers, and sisters, and the deacons (which is a position within the church so often overlooked when people start bitching "yeah, but where is the role of married people within the clergy?" They can adminster Eucharist, they can read the Gospel at Mass), and their work involves administration/teaching at schools, maintaining church programs, doing work within their communities. The Pope's job is to spread the Good News about Jesus Christ, the ultimate priest on Earth. The majority of the stuff he says is the same shit they've been saying for 2000 years now. If there ever comes a time when people in this country are forced to choose their religion or their citizenship (cough China Cough), people will always choose to renounce their religion, because the Catholic Church cannot protect anyone. A government can. The Catholic Church does not protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, in fact, it took 1500 years before someone actually stated that those were the rights endowed by our creator.
What kind of laws is the Pope making that are affecting me, or the majority of Catholics I know? People have known for a long time you're not suppose to have sex before marriage. We do it anyway. We still are the same way. This Pope is going to repeat the same thing. "No sex before marriage." And how can I really argue with him? It's a fucking commandment.
Condoms? I'll use a little example here of how most Catholics think about condoms.
I have this cousin, one of three sisters. She was 16, dropped out of school, started doing drugs, and hanging out with losers. She gets pregnant.
So my grandmother tells my mother.
So, my mom says, "didn't they ever hear of protection?"
My grandmother goes, " Well, she's Catholic."
My mom says, "If she was really thinking about being Catholic, she wouldn't be having sex at 16."
You're not suppose to be having sex before marriage, so why bother talking about preaching about condoms. The only time a Catholic can use a condom is if he is at risk of transmitting something to his wife, or vice versa. You're not suppose to kill sperm, or try to prevent pregnancy. And you're not suppose to get an abortion, but a Catholic can get a dispensation in cases of rape.
What does that mean to the average Joe Catholic. It means, when you ask your priest about those pressing questions regarding condoms, he's gonna say, "The Catholic Church says you shouldn't be having sex before marriage, but, if you're gonna do it, use a rubber." A priest will speak to you as both a representative of the Church, and as a regular guy.
Besides, I learned about condoms in a Catholic school, in Catholic school classes.
They will never allow homosexuals into the Catholic Church.
At the beginning of your first diatribe you said you don't understand why catholics care so much about the pope. You weren't only talking about you, or the population of catholics you know, but all catholics. He doesn't change their life. They'll never meet them, etc etc etc.
Well the Pope has much more control over the church than the president has over your healthcare and your taxes. So the people who find religion a major part of their life are surely going to care a great deal about the new pope because of his power. Just like how you care about the president because it affects your life.
Your comment about "well the pope doesn't really run anything, it's the local priests and deacons". Yeah, same thing with the president. Because all the local governments are set up to run things, the president's real job is (or at least should be) foreign policy and spreading the word and glory of the US (just like the Pope's job is to spread the word of Jesus).
The other reason they care so much is that the Pope is basically God on earth. He's viewed as God's chosen messenger and people think that he's got some red phone to the magical mystery man in the sky.

To the Pope Pole!
Jay's view is interesting as a Catholic. His view symbolizes what is wrong with the Catholic church in this country. Nobody wants to follow the churches rules. Did you ever try getting laid in Ireland? They take the church dead serious. Americans Catholics want their cake and they want to eat it too. If you don't look for a leader of your church to set doctrine on how to live your lives according to the wishes of God, why have a leader? As much as it pains me to say this, Galt is dead on here.
