When I was on dial-up I noticed that those things take the longest to load, even when they were hidden.

My vote goes for lose most of them or move them to a pop-up window like every other board on the planet has done.

same here, at work it's a pain in the ass - plus sometimes, even though I've loaded the page already, it tends to "reload" everything, including the smileys, which takes a while.

a separate pop-up window would be nice - maybe even whittling them down since some are repeats and only differ in size.

It was little button that would expand the smile section if you so desired. It was there one day or maybe on another skin. I use the blue skin now and it's not here.
