Pandora: DJ/Radio Cast

Pretty great personal DJ/Radio Station thru the web.

The Music Genome Project

On January 6, 2000 a group of musicians and music-loving technologists came together with the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever.

Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like.

Over the past 5 years, we've carefully listened to the songs of over 10,000 different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world.

It has been quite an adventure, you could say a little crazy - but now that we've created this extraordinary collection of music analysis, we think we can help be your guide as you explore your favorite parts of the music universe.

We hope you enjoy the journey.

its too narrow. you put in a artist or song and they shovel shit at you. last.fm is built upon people actually listening to music. they observe what people are listening to and gather all their collections into categories, sub-catagories, etc.... its more organic, its more representative of a larger segment of user preferences, its taking everything everyone is listening to in real time and creating and evolving the collection of genres and subgenres.

one is based on a small group of elitist music 'experts' the other is based on what real people are listening to.

but you're following the conclusions of a few so-called music 'experts', how pompous and elitist is that?

power to the people.

actually, you are off-based. a group put definitions to certain songs...if they match based on your music choices or those you put "like" or "dislike"...well...doesn't seem very elitist.

so...if we go by your view...

Google is elitist?

each song was given certain descriptions...and databased. when you pick a band or song..it grabs those decriptions and picks others based on them..matching. then based on your likes or dislikes...makes adjustments on picks. the project was just to provide anazlysis and descriptions. when you pick things..it does searches to find others that will match.

that match according to the descriptions of a small group.

keyser is right. end of story.
I love him. He's like those happy old people who become known for sitting by the side of a busy street and waving to passing cars. People drive by regularly and beep just to see him and get him to wave to them.

That's just like our Arpi... except he doesn't wave or anything. He just says mean things to you.

Last is slow. Pandora let me discover about 3 or 4 new bands. The choice is clear.

i did originally when you brought it up but i didn't like it at the time. i found Pandora more fluid and helpful...but the huge turnoff was the time it took. but i figure i'll try it again in lieu of your post.
