Wireless network

Apparently someone in this apartment has wireless access and my laptop can detect it. I've ignored it for the most part but I just tried to establish a connection and use it and it works! Can I leech off that without being caught?

since its an apartment building it would be pretty hard to tell whos computer it is, but they can see the computer name and MAC address. so if for some extreme reason the cops come in and starts investigating, they can tie it to you

most likely nothing will happen, but it is possible, just like its possible the RIAA can sue you for downloading stuff

Actually, the worst they could do (given that you think that clicking the "search available networks" is some form of high end espionage - and therefore you probably have absolutely zero security protection on your own computer) is have complete access to your computer, any information you have on it, and any key stroke you make on it.

But since they didn't secure their connection, I'd imagine either a) they specifically left it open and therefore don't care if people leetch or b) are as equally inept technologicially as you are, and therefore there shouldn't be a problem.

of course, they could be a hacker who intentionally leaves their network open so that other people leetch and then steal all of their information. its not a bad scheme if you know what you're doing

i got me my own wireless network now. I posting this from my bed on my laptop and the cable modem is all the way over there! I can go anywhere here I want now and be with my buddies! This is so exciting! Amazing stuff.
