Yup, I read about it yesterday, I feel bad for the guy, they really fucked him over, he wasn't even allowed to give speeches about computer security and make somewhat of a living.

Fucking guy gets arrested for hacking, gets out and Woz gives him a kick-ass laptop?!?! What is this world coming to? (I'm jealous)
To spend 4 1/2 years in prison with no trial, then when you get out you're on probation and not allowed to touch a connected computer? Not only did the punishment not fit the crime, it was just an outlandish punishment to begin with. They were so afraid of this guy they wouldn't let him use a pay phone.
By the way, if you haven't seen Freedom Downtime, go see it. It's a documentary by Emmanual Goldstein about what happened to Mitnick. After you watch that, go check out Operation Takedown to see the bullshit spin that people can put on a story.

Isn't Hackers 2 also loosely based on Mitnick?

I think the official title of Takedown was "Hackers2: Operation Takedown"... although it really had nothing to do with the cornball geekfest that is Hackers. And actually, after seeing the documentary, you will get a different appreciation for "...Takedown", as it really is a comedy of sorts.
