A while ago, they came out with the morning after pill.... in it's conception phase it was called "RU486". I thought this was odd because:
Are you for 86'ing [this baby]?
So this week they've come out with a hangover drug and it's called... (dramatic pause) RU21
Are you 21? For a drug to help you recover from a night of drinking?
I'm probably the only one, but I do find this rather odd.

Actually, RU21 is a cold-war era drug used by undercover spies. It would allow them to go out and do very heavy drinking - to gain trust or pump someone for info while hammered and more likely to speak - with little after effects. The buzz is we may see a few more of these KGB / CIA type drugs in the next few years as all this stuff becomes de-classified

Back to Kid's question though, the drug name RU-486 is just a shorthand name it was given by the company that made it. It was a French company called Roussel Uclaf, and it was drug formulaion #486...hence RU-486. The real name of that drug is actually mifepristone - it's in the steriod family.
