Everybody's sick of hearing the SAME songs over and over again. So, who should be getting air time that's not? What bands are really popular on the college circuit and clubs, but isn't on the radio?

the problem is this.

Minutes in a day: 1440
Minus commercial and talk time:750
Average song length: 3
Songs played per day: 250

No niche radio station has 250 editted songs to choose from. And if they did, you'd still here every song once a day.

No matter what, after hearing a song a certain amount of times, you get sick of it.

PLUS: If you bring in new bands, the general opinion of them changes.

For instance: Limp Bizkit.

When they started getting air, people thought they were cool. Now you hear about them & their music EVERY DAMN DAY & you get sick of them. Now they're just another flavor of the month/year...

At least play more than one or two song's from a CD.If I keep hearing the same song over and over there's no way I'm going to want to buy that CD.

WFMU is free form radio. Too bad the DJ's play really obscure music only THEY like. Good thing is they would prolly hire you to DJ on their station.

Too much Our Lady Peace lately, IMO that singer's voice is like scratching nails on a chalk board...

More Queens of the Stone Age on radio, one of the most brilliant, original albums last year :)

I think he has a unique voice. Its not for everyone but at least its something different. They just released a new album and i'm looking forward to hearing it on the radio. The last one hardly got any airplay.

I don't even listen to the radio for music anymore. When you have a napster collection pushing 2000+ songs you can pretty much put 200 on 10 CD's and listen to just about anything you could ever want to on a MP3 ready CD player.

I listen to the Radio for Stern in the morning, R&F middays, and O&A in the afternoon.

I saw Our Lady Peace back in 1995 when they played at Q104.3's "Pre-Fire Works in the Park" at Bryant Park. Only one good song (Starseed). Also played with one-hit-wonder Paw.

But really, where is the next unsigned band that will "change the face of music" or at least radio?

Arthur, you just have to look for it (not on radio) I have absolutely no problem finding new good music.

I have a bad feeling that "stoner/psychadelic/doom rock" is the next big thing again...unfortunately, it's one of the main types of music I listen to and I don't want it to be popular. But there are A LOT of bands, esp. in NJ (Slowing/Solace/Shuvelhead) that are playing this music...

and a new Sabbath & Monster Magnet will bring it to the front

Listen to "Happiness is not a fish that you can catch"

I think its their best album.

You'd only like starseed if you listened to what the RADIO plays you. Fuck RADIO, these days you need to find the music you like on your own.

I know a couple of good local bands.

Stretcher (Alright, I know the lead singer)
Kill By Inches

Found out about Disturbed a month before they hit it big. I think they're the best new hard rock band out their.

Kittie's great too.

So, what website, indie shop, whatever are you looking at to find the good stuff?

There aren't enough real metal stations...WSOU is the best you can get, and it's a college station. Don't get me wrong, they are a great station, but I'd like to have a station that gives me heavy fucking music 24 7

I'm with you Corpse. Even SOU gets annoying sometimes. K Rock and the old Q104.3 were godsent when I was in highschool, but so was MTV in the 80s....
Everything gets played out.

As for a site, try www.kittie.net (not spamming!)
They give you links to other places like antimtv.com & so forth...

corpsegrinderjunk is completely right about wsou... when i'm not listening to o and a or listening to a cd those guys on 89.5 are the best that is out there. the only bad thing about them is that the sports radio sometimes cuts them off in the middle of nowhere, like your listening to "walk" by pantera and the next thing you here is princeton sports scores :)

the most overplayed band on the radio is 3 doors down, they're pop enough to be on z100 but rock enough to be on k-rock so they get played out twice as fast

as for bands who dont get enough exposoure are kottonmouth kings, insane clown posse, twiztid, system of a down, and basically every punk band except blink 182

Here's something really fucked up! I first heard butterfly by Crazytown (I think?) on SOU and the other day my fiance was singing it. I asked her where she heard it & she said it was the latest song on Z100!?!?!? How the fuck does that happen!?!?

How does it happen? If a song is catchy, it will crossover onto pop stations.

Theirs one band that has truley overcome the boundries. U2. U2 is a band thas get played on so many stations. But u2 has been played by people like vicne scelsa, that see u2 as a deep band thats fits in with thier "ecceltic obscure music". But u2 is also on z100!!! Z100!!!!!! a corprate top 40 holier than thou "we play whats cool only" station. The complete polar oppsoite. U2 also gets played on ccbbsssffmmmm by old tired djs, in a lost world of old fogotten music. But their cool enoguh to be a fav band of someone like opie and anthony who hate cbs. Thier on krock casue their a alterative band that caters to the young dmeo, but also is played on lite fm, where soccer moms listen and gets pumped though buniessnes as background music (stuff you hear in supermakets). Thier on WPLJ, which your older sister listens, but also on classic rock that plays the moldy classics for your middle aged parents. I also belive KTU plays u2, witch is a dance station. U2 is over here now. (and here, and here, and here)

Spitfire,

You like a little bit of sludge? I like a lot of
those bands. Do you ever go to the Brighton
Bar to see the Atomic Bitchwax? Do you like
the Melvins? They are playing in NY and in
Philadelphia at the end of April.

I know what you're saying about that genre
becoming more popular. Hopefully it won't. If
it does, people will lose interest pretty quickly
b/c a lot of it is too slow for people and too
tuned down. That kind of music has been
around for years and hasn't ever caught on too
much. Don't get me wrong, I like to see the
bands get paid what they deserve, but the fans
can be so incredibly LAME.

Josh
