OZZIE’S AN ISLANDER!

Three-time All-Star, Two-Time Cup Winner Osgood

Snatched in Waiver Draft
(Sept. 28, 2001) -- The Islanders dramatically upgraded their goaltending and improved their playoff hopes when they acquired three-time NHL All-Star Chris Osgood from the Detroit Red Wings in today’s Waiver Draft.

“When you can acquire a player of Chris’ caliber and accomplishments without giving up a player on your roster, you do it,” said Islanders GM Mike Milbury. “He’s got 221 wins and only 110 losses in the regular season, he backstopped his team to a Stanley Cup four years ago and he’s only 28. I’d say we are pretty fortunate to bring Chris Osgood to Long Island.”

Osgood owns two Stanley Cup rings from his eight seasons with the Red Wings, carrying the load in the 1998 playoffs with a brilliant run of 16 wins in 22 games and a 2.12 GAA. He is also just 28-years old, meaning his arrival is an extension of the Islanders’ dream off-season that included the acquisition of 27-year old stars Alexei Yashin and Michael Peca. Osgood, Yashin and Peca are all front-line performers with enough years in the league to lend leadership to a developing team, yet are young enough to have their best years still ahead. Osgood has two seasons remaining on his current contract.

The 5-11, 180-pound Osgood is a two-time William Jennings Trophy winner (shared with Mike Vernon, 1996 and 1997) and a three-time All-Star selection (1996-1998). In Red Wings history, he is second behind only the legendary Terry Sawchuk in wins (221) and shutouts (30).

Osgood has posted 30 or more wins in four separate seasons. He was selected by Detroit in the third round (54th overall) in the 1991 Entry Draft and played his first game in Toronto on October 15, 1993. His first win was against Lost Angeles on October 23, 1993.

Described as a stand-up goaltender, Osgood is known for his quick glove hand. He is an aggressive goalie who challenges shooters and plays the angles well.

It isn’t often that a player of Osgood’s caliber becomes available via a waiver draft – in fact, we’re not too sure a three-time All-Star in his prime has ever been available. But Detroit’s surplus of talent in goal (with their summertime trade for Dominik Hasek) led to the Islanders’ fortunate gain.

Other than the Rangers, the whole Atlantic Division looks competitive (and if a miracle happens, the Rangers might be good, and we'll have a good ol' Patrick Division fight for the title)

If richter stays healthy, if Lindros can keep from getting knocked unconscious and if Dvorak continues his development as an up and coming allstar, that division will be very competitive once again after a few years off.

Rangers will still get a better record than the Islanders.

If the rest of the league suddenly retires, the Rangers should consider the cup theirs.

i knew it wouldnt be long until he got snatched up by a team. Great pick by the Isles. theyve been needing a decent goaltender the past couple years. I actually think this year they could put up a fight against the rest of the leaugue.

Lets stop talking trash. Im not going to say anything now, and Im sick of hearing Islander fans talking trash.

I personally believe that their is no Way the Islanders will be better than the Rangers this year.

Well we are 1 week away from the Season lets find out. When the Islanders are ahead of the Rangers and playing as great as all you Islander fans think they will, then you can start talking some trash.

And the worst team in the Division might be the Penguins.

I think it was a good move getting Osgood. They improved themselves with that move. Ill give them their props for that.

Put your money where your mouth is.

I will meet you any time any place and distribute any amount of cash to your liking if the Islanders beat the Rangers by 20 Points this year.

Not even the Devils or Flyers will beat the Rangers by 20 points.

I cant wait for this season to begin so bad. You Islander fans are in for such a rude awakening. You see Yashin,Pecca, and Osgood and you think a Stanley Cup Parade is coming down Hempstead Turnpike.

God Damn, I cant wait for Hockey Season.

How about 20 bucks that if any of the three teams mentioned Isles, Devils, Flyers.

20 points is only 10 wins, you sure about that?

Forget about the Devils or Flyers, Ill take any bet 50 bucks, even up. Who will have more points the Rangers or Islanders?

I bet my Uncle last year and gave the Islanders 10 points. The Rangers finished 20 points ahead.

But since I am hearing all this great stuff about how the Islanders are going to be the Gods of Hockey, I dont think you guys need a handicap this year.

Can somebody please intelligently explain to me how the Islanders are going to be so good this year? Go ahead do it, and maybe you can convince me. I still see a bunch of mediocre at best players around the guys you brought in. I see a team that has alot of new players and will need time to gel as a team. I see a First Year Coach who has never coached in the NHL before trying to put these new pieces together. And I see a team that has not done a positive thing in this league for nearly a decade.

do i sense some discrepancy there? or simply stupidity? that sounds like some trash talking to me francine.
the isles will not be the best team in the league this year, but they will have the greatest improvement. i'd even be willing to say that they'll challenge for the atlantic division title against philly and the devils. the rangers on the other hand are doing things totally wrong. they're doing what milbury did in the past, only backwards. mad mike relied on youth to do something, whereas dumbass glen is hoping that the old geezers will get the job done. it takes a mix, and it takes time. mike finally figured that out, and now it's our turn.
6 days till isles opening day.

Quit griping F.B.. For the first time in 20 years the Islanders have made all the right moves this off season. Unlike the Rangers who once again have gotten an over paid over-the-hill ex-superstar. You have had the highest payroll in hockey for years, but only have one cup and a few contending teams to show for it. We finally have an owner ("Joe, who owns team" "OWNS, OWNS" [slap shot refference]) who gives a shit and is spending $$$$, and we are a better team then the Rangers (not that that is saying much). We may not win a cup this year, but it would be a big disapointment not to make the playoffs. Let's go Islanders.

You said it 6 days till Opening Day.

And you Islander fans are really high on your team and thats good for you. But now I dont want to hear any excuses when your team is sucking ass the first month of the season.

I dont want to hear that it takes a while for the team to gel, and this is a 2-3 year project.

No excuses, the Islanders are a Great Team! I am stil waiting for somebody to tell me why, but apparantly they are.

Hot damn, I actually have a reason to watch the Islanders this year. After suffering for more than 8 seasons, I have something to look forward to!
