There are two ways to drive the funding for alternative Energy.

1. Stop allowing 'Soft Money' to fund political Campaigns. Typically the companies that offer the most money want something in return that keep the money coming into thier pockets. In the case of oil producer: They provide soft money, and politicians vote agaist alternative Energy.

2. The cost of energy can continue to grow until it is feasible for private companies to research alternative power sources that are economically viable. When Gas is $4 a gallon like it is in Europe, US companies may start looking to more efficient use of or current fuel while developing a true long term solution.

It is all about money, not technology... There will always be companies making money with the current technology that will fight change even if it makes our lives better.

I bet I will soon wish I was still adopted by Fez.

Sorry Roger :( I had to kill the thread. If this talk of Gerbils used for power continued, my side job as a plumber in the village would dry up.

I bet I will soon wish I was still adopted by Fez.

-Power Cells for Residential use are already being tested in a few markets. (Chicago?)
-The amonut of money being spent on SDI research is absolutely miniscule in comparison to the overall budget. Experimenting new technologies is not a bad thing.
-Part of the problem today comes from people's past resistance of nuclear energy.

-How about using the methane from many farts?

How are we going to get everyone to turn on their microwaves at the same time??

No you can't. You can blame this on Carter and Clinton. Both had no real energy policy.

Almost all research comes from this. The internet this message board runs on started out as a military project.

If you want to talk about wasted money, how about the funded study to see if we could collect methane gas from a cow's ass, and use it as a national energy souce.

When Reagan took office he cut back on all the scietific research projects. Funding for all the major scientific programs cut down to nil, hundreds of the top brains were lost, and projects abandoned. Yet he still tripled the national deficit. Had those programs been given proper funding who knows what we could have acheived by now.

Reagan was a shitty president. Yet, people love the guy. Talk about how the perception doesn't equal the reality...and that's not the Alzheimer's I'm talking about.

People loved Reagan because he was a great actor. He didn't know shit about running a country, but he could make grandmothers wet from talking like he did.

Instead of pumping billions of dollars into something not likely to work maybe we should try free healthcare like Canada.

Who taught you people all this crap? Reagan was a great leader, note I said leader, not president. Most of you people weren't even born yet, or were born when he was president. Jimmy Carter decimated the military, Reagan had to build it back up. Carter couldn't even mount a successful rescue of the hostages in Iran. The hostages were released less than one day after Reagan was sworn in. They knew he wouldn't stand for that shit. Reagan and Thatcher were the two world leaders that caused the Soviet Union to fold. Without them you maybe building a fallout shelter now. Oh, and about the budget, the Congress passes the budget, not the president.

Regan and Thatcher responsible for the Soviet Union folding? They just happened to be in office when the inevitable happened. It had more to do with Communism creating an economy that doesn't work. Their economy was shit in the early 80s.

Regan was a great leader, albeit a moron. But he had the ability to rally the masses around his agenda, unfortunately something Carter could never do. I've got 2 words that best describe Regan's presidency -- "Star Wars". That had to be all his, I can't believe any of his advisors bought into that bullshit.

The budget, doesn't the President exert a great deal of influence here -- he sends it to Congress right.

Oh, and I was born when Kennedy was President.

Carter is a good man, but a poor leader. Reagan was a good figurehead, but a bad President. And in most cases, Congress is carrying out Presidential initiatives. ie: Bush's tax cut. It has to go through Congress, but it is still his plan. (which is another issue and problem I won't touch here...)

OK communism which actually in practice was state capitalism was bound to collapse in the Soviet Union because. Reagan just was there. And about the hostage thing. The hostages weren't let go because the Iranians hated Carter so much for the hypocritical comments he made so they just wanted to insult him by on the first day of Reagan giving up the hostages. Also Reagan gave up many frozen assets up to Iran which is another factor why. Reagan was a fascist who corporate puppet and did much damage to the US.

No, Painter...both parties put the country into the economic recession. This is what happens when you have pro-corporate interests running the country. As far as your statement on Thatcher and Reagan, two useless battleaxes - the only one who ending the cold war was Mikail Gorbechov and the Soviet Union. You can wave the flag all you want, but don't paint this revisionist history. Reagan was like the scarecrow that you leave on the lawn...scares the crows, and does makes the farmer feel like his crops are protected. If that's what you consider a great leader, well, good luck.

Here's a little clarified info on your hero, Mr. Reagan:

"It's a continuation of the Carter-Reagan policies. Remember that the Reagan policies were proposed by Carter, who didn't have the muscle to push them through. Carter proposed essentially the military buildup that Reagan carried through, except that Reagan escalated it more rapidly in the beginning and leveled it off later.

The Carter administration also proposed to attack welfare spending and the social support system for the poorer sectors, which the Reagan administration then carried through with bipartisan support. What these policies amounted to is turning the state, even more than before, into a welfare state for the rich: a much more interventionist state that pours public resources into high-technology industry and distributes resources away from the poor, combined with attacks on labor and civil rights.

It's objectively a sound policy, I believe, for the privileged and powerful in an internationally complicated environment. They've internationalized capital to take advantage of cheap labor abroad, and intensified the class war that business has always waged against labor and the disadvantaged."

ok....since this has spun into a past presidential discussion... here's my take on the past few leaders we've had... let's go back to ol' Tricky Dick... I'm mean we've all heard about the whole Watergate Scandal stories.. but, hey Nixon did some good too...For crying out loud, he made Elvis an honorary Federal Agent...

After Nixon was forced into an early retirement, Gerald Ford took office...unfortunately ol' Jerry's Presidency was best remembered because of his mocked behavior by Chevy Chase on Saturday Night Live & his drunken mess of a wife's party habits...

Well, we all know Gerald Ford then lost the election to Jimmy Carter...a Georgia peanut farmer...who's lovely wife Rosalyn redecorated the 1600 Penn. Ave. with a fresh coat of white-wash & few chickens...The First Brother introduced us to Billy Beer, while President Jim was chillin' with the Allman Brothers...

Well...needless to say, out With Jimmy and in with Bonzo...I mean Reagan...wait... which was which?...anyways... lots of jelly beans were eaten, we all said No To Drugs... & the world was a beautiful place...

After Cowboy Ronnie's time was up as Sherrif of Rock Ridge...he passed the badge onto George Bush...who basically rode out self-propelled, automated rollercoaster that Uncle Ron had set in motion...WOOooo HOoooo.... this is great Babs...call Jr & tell him he's gotta try this out!!!"

Well... George proved himself a boob & lost the following election to an even bigger one... and not since JFK had so much poontang been passed around an election... Bubba Clinton from Trailer Park, Arkansas was movin' on up to that de-lux apartment in the sky... that's right kids... Slick Willie was running things now... & we all know what that meant.... Fat chicks with cigars & selling your soul to the Devil...
.

Well... eight years of hummers from chubby chicks & Billy-Boy moved up to Harlem...His chump of a Vice lost the election to Daddy's Li'l W and that's where we are today... Hope you're all having fun :) ...I know I am...

- When you are trying to state a case, try using facts instead of accusations that reflect your own opinions.

I consider myself to be an individual that is informed, to a great degree, in politics, being politically active myself and having a clear understanding of our government through research involving the Library of Congress and our National Archives data base, to name a few. However, I am aware that regardless of what the actual facts are the democrats will blame the republicans, the republicans will blame the democrats and the other parties will blame both of them declaring that the two-party system (as some may call it) does not provide them with enough opportunity. The chance of you affiliating yourself with the same party in 20 years as you do now is slim. So becareful of what you say now because one day you may be contradicting yourself. Your experiences and growth of knowledge as you become older has a great impact on how you view government and how you feel your hard earned tax dollar should be spent. To quote a great phrase by what I view as a respected and well known political figure "If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain." - Winston Churchill

Here are some facts

-As governor of California he cracked down on student protestors(especially at UC-Berekely) because they were creating unnessary opposition.

-When elected president Jerry Falwell and the rest of the moral police got political power. Because of Reagan giving them influence they became very powerful and are creating censorhip problems everywhere.

-At the time Reagan left office his approval rating was 30-40% but all of a sudden now he becomes American hero. Talk about Revisionist History.

-Reagan used to be a huge union member than all of a sudden gets tempted by GE. You don't hear him helping out workers after that.

What? Since when does doing the tonsil shuffle with a
primate make you a great actor? Ronny Reagan was a
mediocre actor, and at best a mediocre president. His
image factor was perfect for the role of
distraction/figurehead, and in that he did his job.
Anyone remember the Iran Contra Affair? Hmm?
