I believe that in the early 80s, drinking & driving-related accidents decreased. Why? Because in 1974, the drinking age was lowered to 18. It was raised back to 21 in 1987.
but FTL MADD proved that people get into drunk driving accidents. So if you higher the drinking age less people will drink and this no accidents.

I'm 17. I don't drink. What's the point? Where's the benefit? Where's the fun in it? Oh look, I don't know what I'm saying or doing! LOL!

The most precious thing to me is my complete mental faculties... they are the only thing that amuses me constantly and keeps me sane. Ya, so maybe I don't go to a lot of parties... I've found theres three catagories of people, with rare exceptions:

-The studious kids with little in the way of social life
-Popular kids, social life out the wazoo, care little for school beyond a C/B average to keep their parents somewhat off their backs.
-Popular kids who manage to get good grades, but are for some strange reason, as a class, HUGE JERKS, particularly to the first group.

Some of my best friends are the exceptions of that third class who arent jerks; those exceptions are really overall cool people. Where was I? When did this turn into a discussion of my being unhappy with my life? I'm sorry... I've done it again.

There are far more groups than that SYNT.

I'm 19 and have yet to get drunk. People my age, friends, etc, have the thought process that its cool to go out and get hammered, but I never saw it that way. Probably cuz I've never seen a point to it. Did my kidneys misbehave and need to be punished? What other reason is there to getting drunk? Drinking and Smoking are the same: pointless.

Very few things have points Angelo, even school for the most part. If you want to drink or smoke to have a good time do it, that's the "point"- to enjoy yourself.

I agree FTL, i guess some of it is a product of being underage. Being at college at least, i doubt that a legal drinking age would have less drinking, at least here. maybe outside of college that's different, but here thats basically how it is. if you go out, you usually drink.

I slowed down my drinking for a number of reasons, but the two main ones were the fact Alcoholism runs in my family, and I am well over 21, so the novelty wore off.
Apparently, the report is flawed because they also studied Canada in the process.
The government spends too much time figuring out what to do next with their new problems to make accurate reports.

FTL-
You may perceive your desire to drink less because now it's legal for you - I think it is more maturity. There are plenty of things you do differently as you get older. Did you do the same things as a college senior as a college freshman?

Also, the drinking age went up before 1987. 1983 the process began, and it went up to 19; it went up 1 year each year afterwards until 21. The reason I know this is that at the time I was a student at my college Student Union which had a bar (since 18 was legal age). I had the fun job of proofing freshman and trying to explain why they got stuck being illegal.

(side note - I understand that bar became an ice cream parlor once age became 21)

Of course, at that same time Fraternaties continued to hold giant 500 keg parties.

Ya, sorry about that,... I was thinking about it today, and I must have been tired and upset. I'm wrong.

Well, since everyone else is putting in their two cents:

I'm 17, and I drink... very sporatically at this point. The last time I got really out of control was New Years Eve ((many many bad things happened that night... moving on)). I'm really suprised that I've gone this long without as much as a sip of ... well, anything. My parents know I drink, they don't like it, but know that I can control myself. But since I calmed down with drugs/alcohol/cigarettes... I've just realized how much more pathetic and un-fun I've become :P

Seriously though, there is nothing anyone can really do to stop underage drinking. To paraphrase JJ, kids are going to want to do what they can't. By the time they're an adult, they realize the consequences of breaking the rules... and its left up to their own judgement.

I Know More Than You Think...

hope you live up to be...what you will...i choose to keep myself free...and the truth is...i always think of you...but you will... think of me... smiling... smiling... -JCS

Right, but if it were a legal activity, there would be less incentive to get bombed off your ass. Granted some people still would anyway... point is, you don't really know till you live it. If the drinking age was moved to 18 tomorrow, everyone between 18 and 21 would go on a week-long party binge and then probably just not feel the need to bother anymore... I mean you can say "nah man, that would never be me, I'm gonna party forever!" but you really don't know cause it's not the case, and probably will never become the case, at least not till long after you've turned 21...

I don't agree that once you turn 21 the 'fun' in drinking ceases to exist. That said, I drank a LOT more before turning 21. For me, it's not because it wasn't as fun now that I'm 21, it was more a function of other shit going on in my life that the opportunity to get loaded just wasn't there. I'd still love to drink and get high as much as I used to, but now that I'm out of school the opportunities just aren't there as much. Having no friends within 2500 miles doesn't help much either.

Also, fuck bars. I've been to a bar once in my life. I'd much rather get shitfaced at home or at a friends house than be crowded by 50 sweaty disgusting wannabe Vince Vaughn's dancing like a faggit to Hot 97 music played way too loud. Of course this was at a college bar so I guess it's to be expected.. but again, I haven't really had the opportunity to go to a 'real' bar to get loaded.
I just SUCK
