I can remember being in Windows on the World for a lunch not long ago. After eating, we went to the windows to see the view and were waving to the people on the observation deck. Both the indoor level and the outdoor level were close enough to recognize faces. All I can picture is two people, one in each tower trapped above the flames and staring across that gap at each other as the south tower collapsed. The views from inside and outside the towers will never leave me. | Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | Where would it come from? It's $10 billion (let's just say for arguments sake). We've got INDIVIDUALS in this country that could build it themselves if they wanted. Unlike the third world hovels that this fuckwads originanted from, $10 billion to us isn't much. Our resources aren't finite products like oil. It's human knowledge and inventiveness. In the US we CREATE wealth which is different from selling a product. Becuase of that $10 billlion isn't a problem. The memorial/rebuild debate is an interesting one, but it's really a moot point. They MUST be re-built. It's office space for over 50,000 people. It's not like there are vast open lots in NYC where those companies can rebuild. They will be re-built becuase they are needed both emotionally and economically. However, I don't think that it will be those two towers. I think it will be a single building that is much shorter and much wider. As much as we want to prove that we will move on, we don't want to invite another attack. Would you be willing to work there if they rebuilt the same buildings as a "fuck you" to terrorists around the world? It would be tantamount to saying "Go ahead, just try it again, I dare you" Unfortunately, we must face reality. There is no stopping someone who is willing to end their own life. If it happened once, it could happen again. And this could have been much worse. If we are dealing with people who are willing to give their life, we are dealing with people who can personally detonate a nuclear device atop the city; we are dealing with people who could release anthrax off a boat in the Harbor. The death that this would cause would dwarf what has been done here. I think if the terrorists were really attempting to kill PEOPLE, that is what would have been done. All the things that they targeted in this case were merely symbols of America's strength. They certainly wouldn't have gone after the Pentagon and the White House. If they could have gotten to the stock exchanges, I believe that most certainly would have been their first target. There are few people in the White House, and while the Pentagon is the largest office building in the country, it's so dispersed that (I can't believe I'm fucking saying this) only 500-1000 lives were lost. What is my point? My point is: This could have been MUCH worse. Worse than anyone can imagine. The lives lost could have been in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, if the terrorists were merely trying to end lives. Becuase this can get worse, we don't want things to escalate. We don't want them to push the envelope and see what else they can accomplish. For that reason, we need to take massive, widespread action to extinguish as much of the power structure of these organizations. If some of them lie in our allied nations (like Israel, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia) that's too bad, those countries hand them over immediately or face immense strategic bombings. We need a disproportionate surgical response that wipes out the economy and infrastructure of harboring nations, ends the capital flowing into these terrorits groups, and finally just kills as many of these (non civilian) animals as possible. And unlike the terrorists, we make it known what is going to happen and when it is going to happen. Becuase our actions will be so widespread, that there will be hiding from it, and there will be no way to stop an American military machine hellbent on personal revenge. Just look at what we could do with oil profits as our motives. Imagine the hellfire and brimstone we will rain with vengance as our motive.
