I'm not real surprised that Aerosmith isn't in the top 50.

Sure they've been around forever, but that doesn't really mean they had an effect and were influential on music.

All of their music sounds exactly the same, and they completely sold out to MTV in the 90s and put out all sober gay shit. They then stopped being rock and are now a old, pop, boyband that plays their own instruments.

The two bands I was really surprised that weren't on the list and haven't already been mentioned are the Sex Pistols and Rush, especially Rush

edit** must have overlooked Sex Pistols on the list.

Right you are sir. And if we're mentioning Blind Faith and Cream, how about Derek & the Dominoes :)

Maybe they are just looking for controversy with some picks. I loved the Ramones, but #2? you'd have to be sedated to pick them there.

Even if you allow for influential as a criteria (such as Parliament, Sonic Youth), who did Husker Du really influence? The Pretenders (or Bad Brains?) were more influential, Roof-raising, History making than The Who?

The list is okay. I just with the Pixies would get their due respect.

quote:

who did Husker Du really influence?

Some of you need to listen to more than just k-rock radio. Okay sure I'm not a big fan of Husker Du, but I do know they influenced one of the most influentual bands of the late 80's early 90's the PIXIES. Who I am surprised didn't make the list the. The Pixies Had an influence on Nirvana, Radiohead, Pavement (all on the list). Some bands they influenced not on the list; Weezer, Toadies, Foo Fighters, Presidents of the United States of America, Everclear, Spoon, Veruca Salt, PJ Harvey, Hole, Bush, Baboon and the Smashing Pumpkins.

quote:

"The Pixies were probably the most influential band in the last 20 years," said Everclear leader Art Alexakis.

"They were the original grunge band," said Bruce McDonald, who, as music director at Boston modern rock outlet WFNX from 1985 until 1991, watched the Pixies' ascension to indie nation stardom. "They were one of those bands who made a sound that launched 1,000 others like them. There was something super special about them, and they quickly became the standard by which other Boston bands became measured."

It's hard to imagine what indie rock would now sound like had it not been for Pixies' influence. Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain openly admitted to pillaging their melodic "quiet bit-LOUD BIT" post-punk style for Smells Like Teen spirit, and countless acts the world over cite them as a primary influence.

Indeed, this is the most fucked up ass-backwards list I have ever seen.

Spin Magazine has just lost all my respect for being an even remotely accurate source for musical information. It's not even worth for me to wipe my ass with.

Spin: read by phonies, unimaginative whitefolk, and liberals everywhere in the USA, especially Berkley California.
The list a crock of shit, plain and simple. Slayer, Aerosmith, the doors and Rush should be up there.
Some of the bands on that list should be higher up while others should be nuked off of the face of the planet.

And how does Husker Du have more influence than Pink Floyd?

No, probably not, but Husker Du was one of the greatest hard rock bands of the early to mid 80's. Every hard rock band that came out in the 80's was influenced by this band in some way. Husker Du are the mastadon's of rock. The loudest band ever to play.

The Pixie's didn't invent grunge. Are you fuckin cracked? There were so many other bands that all influenced grunge, Pixies included. How about Green River (Who split to become Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone), Melvins...and many many more. No one band created grunge, it was a collective, just as no one band created punk. It was a lifestyle and many bands had their hand in this one as well. But the Ramones at #2? Someone was DEFINATLY sedated when they picked that.

Again, I have to ask, what is this list called EXACTLY? The Most INfluential bands? The Greatest bands? What? And how do they pick them? I think everyone is bitching about this and you don't know the criteria they used.

As far as I'm concerned, the list should consist of 50 bands, but the #2 and #1 spots should always go to the Rolling Stones and The Beatles, respectively. The other 48 spots should be the ones to fight for.

It's just wishful thinking on my part, but I would like to see Bush, my favorite band, on one of these lists someday. Sigh...:(

Yes Kee Kee, there are other KISS fans on this board. KISS rules. It would have been nice to see Stone Temple Pilots somewhere on this list, but this list sucks ass. Btw, PCU references are always cool.

I have to second the following comments...any music list 50 places long MUST have Clapton, and absolutely should have the man who revived/reinvented Electric Blues, Stevie Ray Vaughan....and would be nice to see STP. And why must I always be the 'mark' who has to bring up VAN Fucking HALEN?!?!?! You want influence...sure, somebody else might be playing up the neck of the guitar by now, but Eddie had millions of people doing so 25 fucking years ago!
The more of these lists that come out, the more it becomes painfully clear:
TOP 50 & TOP 100 LISTS = Magazine failing miserably and we need to stir up controversy!

They use the Chris "Mad Dog" Russo rule...when thing are bleak and you are bombing miserably (like when your partner is on vacation), make up something that will piss off A LOT of people (even if you don't believe it) and at least you'll have lots of people pay you attention to tell you how stupid you are.
"Chris Russo on the fan, Mike on vacation....OK...Joe DiMaggio was a glorified .250 hitter with one lousy record-breaking hit streak...and I believe he was gay!! Ooooh, look, the lines are jammed...I've gotten through another day solo!"

This is one of the worst compilations I have ever seen. As someone who takes music seriously, all I can say is that the jerk-offs at Spin have some of the finest reefer imaginable. How could Metallica be ahead of Black Sabbath? How could the Patti Smith Group be ahead of Pink Floyd? How could Sly and the Family fucking Stone be ahead of GNR, The Who and Pearl Jam? Where are The Doors? Where are Nine Inch Nails? Where's the Stones? Where's Cream? Where's Tool? Spin gave top slots to radical indie bands that hd influence over a small market whereas great, influential bands were blown off. I'm not a fan of their music, but where is Elvis and Springsteen and Dylan? What a bunch of kid touching, "we're so radical and hip and cool" cocksuckers.

Why do yuou say "The Who and Pearl Jam?" as if they don't belong on the list. If anything they both belong much higher in the list. The who has influenced so many bands including Pearl Jam. What band doesnt sound like Pearl Jam these days? Shawn
