I have a good friend in radio who has access to the critical trade journals. This report came straight from "Radio & Records" which is only available to "radio people". It's a little out-of-date (came out in Feburary), but still interesting...

A Mixed Fall Book For Opie & Anthony

It’s been eight months since Opie & Anthony inked a lucrative, three-year syndication deal with Infinity that put the guys who introduced "balloon knot" and
"yambag" into the American lexicon on a gaggle of Rock and Talk FMs and comatose AMs. So how are radio’s toxic twins faring in the ratings so far?

Of the six FMs carrying the show in real-time on a decent signal, three are up and three are down in afternoon drive. Let’s examine O&A’s male 18-34
performance at each of these six stations in the September 11th-tempered Fall book.

On WNEW-FM, their New York City flagship, Opie & Anthony’s male 18-34 share declined for the second consecutive book (14.1-12.9-10.8). The guys had a 15.9
one year ago. However that 10.8 is second only to Urban WQHT’s 12.7 – and more than double what anyone else is pulling on ‘NEW’s FM Talk format.

WYSP/Philadelphia became the first O&A syndication affiliate early last June at the tail end of the Spring Arbitron. The result: a 12.4-17.0 explosion in the
summer. Though that cooled off to 14.1 in the Fall, it’s still No. 1 in the market. However, ‘YSP’s grabbing a 14.4 share of men 18-34 in middays with a music
format and a huge Howard Stern lead-in.

Opie & Anthony’s impact on WJFK/Washington hasn’t been pretty. Don & Mike were racking up a 16.4 in men 18-34 in afternoons last Spring – no one else was even close. But they got bumped to
middays on August 6th to make room for O&A. The station’s afternoon numbers promptly tanked. But even that 10.8 in the Summer looks good compared with the 4th-ranked 4.9 O&A pulled in the Fall.

Boston’s the trickiest market to handicap Opie & Anthony’s ratings impact. Following much controversy, WBCN finally put them on in the town where they first made their name. That was August 7 –
smack-dab in the middle of the summer book. ‘BCN’s ratings were already on a major upswing prior to that. In fact, the station’s biggest Summer month was July. So in the half-music/half-talk summer
book, ‘BCN’s afternoon share of men 18-34 zoomed 8.7-13.6. Who deserves the credit for that 5-share increase? In the Fall, O&A added another half-share to it (13.6-14.1). That’s 3.5 shares better
than 2nd-ranked WAAF (which grew 9.9 – 10.6) and only 6.5 shares less than what Howard Stern gets in mornings on ‘BCN.

Opie & Anthony are kicking serious ass in Cleveland in Buffalo, decimating the argument that their act only plays well along the East Coast. Cleveland’s WXTM picked up the show on July 2nd – six days
into the summer book and five weeks after the station’s new "Xtreme" format launched. Spring to Fall, ‘XTM climbed 5.8-11.7-19.3 in men 18-34 – putting them eight shares ahead of No. 2 WMMS in
afternoons. That’s Xtreme’s best performing daypart by more than two shares.

WBUF/Buffalo quietly added O&A in late August. In the Fall, their first full book with the show, ‘BUF ripped from a 6.7 to a 14.8, blowing past both Modern WEDG and Classic WGRF. That 14.8 is only
1.2 shares behind ‘BUF morning man Howard Stern.

Bottom line: In eight months, O&A have quickly had a major effect on afternoons in handful of cities but their ratings impact is still evolving. "It generally takes about a year for a show like this to mature,"
says WNEW-WJFK PD Jeremy Coleman. "When they do, they’re like an airplane at 50,000 feet in the air. They float up and down a few thousand feet but it’s so high up, it doesn’t even matter."

Not that I know for sure, but I seriously doubt a trade publication would use that choice in wording.

This was posted on another radio board a few months ago. The winter ratings actually come uot in a few weeks. Not sure about the other markets, but O&A are going up quite a bit in D.C. I dn't know what I can & can't post even though the #'s are out if you look for them I'll just say that the phase 22 winter fans donn't look all that impressive, but it is because it measures (Dec/Jan/Feb). I have seen the month to month breakouts O&A did horrible in December, went way up in Jan, and up some march in Feb. When the Winter book comes out the horrible December they had will be gone and March will replace it. (Jan/Feb/March)

That's how it goes in radio.
Hopefully, "Parasite Radio" aka Don and Mike won't be folling O&A wherever they go.
Philly, You can thank Washington for that crap of radio. :-p

I'm very curious to see a ratings chart of how D&M are killing YSP. Probably looks like the slope that Lazy Black Earl was afraid to ski down.

i normally just turn off the radio and work in silence rather than listen to Don and Mike on WYSP. you better believe i have the radio back on and ready to rock at 3 though -- best part of my day. if you went to any of the Norton shows in Philly over the weekend, it's clear that O & A are huge here. Norton's original visit was planned as 4 shows over 2 nights, then jumped up to a third then 4th night within a day when everything was selling out within hours.
