"They're off the air in New York in the near future," said Opie. "That's a fact." This assertion came as the two shows warmed up for summer by taking swings at each other. Trashing other programs, including those on the station, is not uncommon at WNEW (102.7 FM), the city's lowest-rated major station. Don Geronimo of Don and Mike, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., has just given up the program-director job at sister station WJFK in Washington, where Opie and Anthony are also heard in syndication. Saying he doesn't have to be diplomatic now, he charged Opie and Anthony with undermining his New York show by badmouthing it. Opie said Don and Mike are doing badly here — 27th place — "because the show s----. It's a failure. We're looking at new shows every day. We're tired of the show before us being such a loser." Geronimo called Opie and Anthony during their show, and they hung up. The station itself, as a matter of policy, doesn't comment on personnel matters. Opie said that while WNEW has often "piled a bunch of crap around us," he and Anthony "are digging" morning host Scott Ferrall and evening hosts Ron and Fez.
