OPIE, ANT'NY PACT DRAMA

By JOHN MAINELLI

May 31, 2001 -- FIVE months after Infinity inked a $100-million, eleventh-hour renewal for Howard Stern, a similar drama is consuming Opie & Anthony, the top-rated afternoon team.
"We found out today that WNEW . . . is now playing hardball and saying they could force us to stay [while talks continue] after years of not being taken care of,"Opie told listeners yesterday on the eve of the expiration of their first contract.

"It's not true that we're playing games like some are saying,"Opie insisted. "I'm sick of this crap and would leave tomorrow if I could."

Opie & Anthony, both Long Island natives, arrived at WNEW via Boston three years ago - about a year before the station dumped its famous but faded rock format for all-talk.

"We've been carrying the station on our back for a really long time and, quite frankly, the load is getting pretty heavy,"Opie grumbled.

"We've been gagged, crapped on, promised things that never materialized. It's just ridiculous,"moaned partner Anthony Cumia - referring in part to the corporate prohibition that they not mention Howard Stern's name.

Reliable sources say Infinity's arch-rival, the even-larger Clear Channel radio group, has made a serious run at "O & A."

Anything can happen with radio negotiations, but inside sources tell The Post that Infinity plans to do whatever it takes to keep the pair and plans to syndicate them in several cities.

No matter how much they want out of WNEW and Infinity, I agree with Skeet...they are staying. At least I know my radio at work tunes to the station they are on in the afternoons!!

Do we really care who they work for? You know that even if there's a short hiatus, you'll eventually be able to tune in to listen to the dynamic duo before very long at all. I don't give a damn what station it is, as long as it's available in NYC.

If worse comes to worst, I will fork up some of my millions and build my own radio empire, hiring O&A as my aces in the hole.

If you go in there smart Gringo, I'll bury you there.

"Opie & Anthony contract talks down to the wire"
By JOHN MAINELLI

Exactly five months after Infinity inked a $100 million eleventh-hour renewal of morning star Howard Stern, a similar drama is consuming Opie & Anthony, the radio giant's top-rated afternoon team.

If the rowdy and combative duo are forced to continue on the air next week without a new contract, expect even more biting of the hands that feed them than listeners have heard over the past several weeks.

"We found out today that WNEW...is now playing hardball and saying they could force us to stay [while talks continue] after years of not being taken care of," Opie told listeners yesterday on the eve of the expiration of their first contract.

"It's not true that we're playing games like some are saying," Opie insisted. "I'm sick of this crap and would leave tomorrow if I could."

Opie & Anthony, both Long Island natives, arrived at WNEW via Boston three years ago -- about a year before the station dumped its famous but faded rock format for all-talk.

"When we came here, the overall station was a 1.7 and now it's a [23rd ranked] 1.5, and that's with our ratings!" Opie, a.k.a. Gregg Hughes, complained last week.

"We've been carrying the station on our back for a really long time and, quite frankly, the load is getting pretty heavy," Opie grumbled.

"We've been gagged, crapped on, promised things that never materialized. It's just ridiculous," moaned partner Anthony Cumia -- referring in part to the standing order that they must never mention Howard Stern's name.

Reliable sources say Infinity's arch-rival, the even-larger Clear Channel radio group, has made a serious run at "O & A."

Anything can happen with radio negotiations, but inside sources tell The Post that Infinity plans to do whatever it takes to keep the pair and plans to syndicate them in several cities where it has stations similar to WNEW (102.7 FM) that target young males with sex-heavy talk shows.

Syndication has been a top priority with the team and Clear Channel is at a disadvantage because none of its five New York City stations does talk and its talk stations in other cities tend to be more traditional (i.e., adult- and issues-oriented).

It's not known what Opie & Anthony have been earning for their New York-only afternoon drive talk show.

Infinity and the team's high-powered L.A.-based agent Robert Eatman aren't talking, but there's little doubt that O&A's fast-rising ratings will propel them into seven figures each -- and more so, depending on the extent of their syndication deal.

I can't believe some people would rather listen to a gagged, underappreciated, and unsupported Opie & Anthony so they won't have to sacrifice hearing them for a few months. What the fuck is wrong with you people.

Can't you go a few months without the show so you can get to listen to a BETTER show, a show in MORE markets, with MORE listeners, with MORE resources to do BETTER shows without the level of censorship and crap they put up with now. I'm willing to go without hearing them for awhile in order to get the kind of show they deserve.

Cranky Ass, I agree 100%. But I just have this bad feeling that they are either re-signing or have re-signed with Infinity. Perhaps if Anthony would post once in a while. j/k I'm sure he will again once the smoke clears.

I totally agree with Cranky Ass. Thanks to the internet I can listen to worst of all summer till the boys are back. I think moving to Clear Channel would make the show amazing.
Hell forget the lift on the gag order...think of all the cool promotions they would have around the tri-state area! No more cell phones from a bus my friends.

I care to comment....

HEY!!!!Easy there....Y'wanna know why Anth'll always need ROTGUT? It satisfies a primal instinct that we all have, to perform live and SWEAT, without doing a PORNO flick. Something radio'll never provide.

i totally agree with crankyass. these guys have carried this station and this company for the past 2 1/2 to 3 yrs and they still only support the bag-o-douche in the morning. i hope they go to q104.3 and build up a reputation in other cities with them. they already have us in ny. then they'll get what they want and we'll finally have our o&a,howard(jackass) war.
