DJs' phone-y suspension draws static from rival
by Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa
Tuesday, June 5, 2001

The rock 'n' roll radio wars turned veeery ugly yesterday when two WFNX-FM djs were suspended after an audio tape purporting to be rival WBCN-FM afternoon guy Nik Carter engaging in solo phone sex hit the Internet.

Storm and Birdsey, who last week ran a phony obituary ad in three area newspapers implying that Carter was dead, are off the air this week. But whether the duo is really in hot water is still in question. Meanwhile, over at `BCN, station suits were steaming and denying that the voice on the tape was Carter's.

``This is a radio scam,'' fumed WBCN Program Director Oedipus. ``They are out to humiliate Nik Carter but that tape is a Nik Carter imitator. There's no way it's him.''

Well, it sure sounds like Nik. And Oedipus said Carter admits that he has, on occasion, used paid phone-sex services.

Which, by the way, Carter says he found in the back of the Boston Phoenix, the newspaper owned by Stephen Mindich, who also owns WFNX. Well, you see how ugly this is. . . .

Anyway, the whole hoo-ha began last week when Storm and Birdsey (you will note that very few people in rock radio have more than one name) came into possession of the tape after running a contest asking listeners to submit the ``weirdest phone message you ever received.''

After the contest ended, a woman called and offered them a tape that she claims Carter left on her answering machine.

The four messages begin at 6:39 p.m. on a Tuesday, then pick up again shortly before midnight the next night. In them, the alleged Carter describes various X-rated scenarios he'd like to engage in with the woman, complete with lots of moaning and groaning.

And after a rather grand finale, he wishes the woman, ``Happy Thanksgiving!''

``I hope that brightens your day,'' the alleged Carter says.

Birdsey and Storm threatened to play the tape on the air last week (although, trust us, there's very little that wouldn't have to be bleeped out.) But 'FNX Mindich refused to allow it.

Then, as if by magic, the tapes appeared on www.consumptionjunction.com and www.winmx.com over the weekend.

``Two things happened simultaneously,'' said 'FNX program director Cruze. ``First, the phony obit then the tape. I think if it was just one or the other, we'd have given them a warning. But we needed to get control here.''

But over at 'BCN, they are convinced the suspension is a sham and the entire episode was designed to generate publicity for the station, which badly trailed 'BCN in recent radio ratings.

Oedipus blames former WAAF-FM GM Bruce Mittman, who's now running the 'FNX chain of stations. He points out that Mittman was in charge of 'AAF when afternoon djs (and then-Nik Carter rivals) Opie & Anthony were fired for an April Fool's Day joke claiming that Boston Mayor Tom Menino died in a car accident.

``This is typical Bruce Mittman, pull something, then hand out a phony suspension,'' Oedipus said. ``He's trying to get attention but their ratings are still (bleep).''

Mittman, of course, denies everything.

File under: Phone-y Baloney.

FYI - Laura Raposa was the fat bitch O&A were making fun of on the air a few months back.
