I think it's been a little while since Opie and Anthony played this excellent game, and I personally would love to hear it again soon.

{For those of you who haven't experienced it, O&A line up guests - but like two-bit guests schilling lame books or miracle cures. Before bringing the guest onto the show via the phone they tell the audience that the phrase "Serious questions only" is their instruction to ask anything BUT serious questions. The more inappropriate the better! Then they bring the guest on and listen to them squirm. It's just great radio, folks!}

Here's my worry, we all know that in the not too distant future Opie and Anthony will be known all across the country. That's a given.

O&A's relative anonymity outside of the New York and Boston markets (don't confuse that with "Boston Market *tm*") meant that these publicists who were wrangling guests had no idea what their "talent" was going to be hammered with.

Yesterday, near the end of the show with all the hanging up on "I'll be at Caroli..." and all, well, it just made me think about how great phone cruelty is in general.

To put it another way, remember when David Letterman used to do those great bits where he'd drive through McDonald's drive-thru's and say something wacky? Well, he can't do it anymore and has to send people out on his behalf with hidden mic's and earpieces.

Let's use the anonymity factor while we can! :)

I think the reason the whole "Serious Questions Only" routine works is because we, the fans, are willing to do it. This means we are loyal enough to actually pull these off. The Philly and upcoming Chicago markets just dont have this loyalty yet, so it wont work. We cant jump the gun and do it just yet, because we could alienate alot of listeners who maybe support whatever we are tooling with.

I gotta admit though, playing "Serious Questions Only" is gonna get a hell of a lot better once the big names start coming into the studio.

I send my astro zombies to rape this land
Prime directive, exterminate The whole human race
And your face drops in a pile of flesh
And then your heart, heart pounds
Till it pumps in death
Prime directive, exterminate
Whatever stands left"

Ahhh, but the beauty is, they DO screen the calls to make sure that they're all "serious." So I thikn it would still work. I'm thinking that it's just great fun and that the existing listening audience always does a great job in pulling it off.

I don't think there's any need to maintain a constant "wait and see" approach on anything because of new markets. People will like the show, and they really don't need to tinker with it to placate the new audiences. Eventually all of America will "get it." I'm not too worried about that.

They always run the risk of reeening things with the new audience - some chick in a new market could let slip what she has in her pants before she plays the "Guess What's In My Pants" game properly. It's a risk, as a listener, I'm all too happy to have O&A make.

Even if something gets screwed up, it makes for fine, fine radio listenin'!

You're overthinking this: O&A just started, seemingly out of nowhere in NYC in '99. I was listening in the car one afternoon and missed on a lot of the inside jokes, but my interest was piqued and I kept listening. Before long, I was looking forward to traffic jams so I could get more time with O&A. This phenominon will occur across the country, with each listener becoming accustomed to the show. Have faith, it will catch on; who cares if some fat Philly chick with a mullet and g-warts screwed up "Guess what's in my pants" -- the boys always win in the end!

Right! The show has been kicking ass this past week, which for a while we all know was "pig week," until it turned into "be disowned by your family" week.

I just love that old gag, what can I say? I think that O&A have found a happy medium, and I for one certainly don't mind the old bits going into the commercials. Funny is funny, I don't care if I've heard it before!

It's how you play the game of serious inquiries only.
If it works, use it.
