Air Time: 'Arrow' strikes deal to air Stern

On Monday, the popular classic rock station "The Arrow" (KXOA, 93.7 FM) will change its format to talk and will be known as "KXOA, The Talk That Rocks." The star of the hour is raunch-jock Howard Stern, who will make his Sacramento radio debut with "The Howard Stern Show" at 6 a.m. Monday.

"It's gonna be huge," said Doug Harvill, marketing manager for Sacramento's six Infinity Broadcasting stations. "It's a big move for the station into uncontested territory, where there'll be outrageous talk."

The change was made, Harvill said, because FM talk radio offers "an opportunity for a much larger audience, and there has been a demand here for Howard Stern for years."

Stern will be the company's most expensive property in Sacramento.

"I've had him on a station I oversaw at the corporate level," Harvill said. "He's an incredible entertainer and cutting edge and, in my opinion, the best interviewer in media."

Harvill also signed on the syndicated "Opie & Anthony," which will air evenings on KXOA and is expected to debut sometime next week.

Other possibilities to fill KXOA's airtime involve relocation: "The Don & Mike Show" from KHTK, "Lovelines" from KZZO and Kidd Chris from KSFM.

KXOA will continue to play music until additional talk properties are added. All of the DJs (including Staci Anderson, Matt Brys and Eric Hasseltine) from "The Arrow" will be kept on at the local Infinity stations. Only Bill Fox is already off the air (Stern's show replaces his), and Harvill said, "We will find a place for him in Infinity. We're good people-people."
