Infinity is facing a tough decision regarding O & A. The guys get good ratings with their target demo, but they are in tenth place in their timeslot. Mel is paying O & A $7 million and stands to lose money if they dont deliver Stern type numbers. Karmazin is thinking he could get similar numbers with someone else for a hell of a lot less money.

Dont do it Mel. O & A is the future. Get them off the leper colony of WNEW and put them on WXRK where they belong.

You overlook one simple point. O&A make that kind of money because they are syndicated. They make
Infinity money all over the country. Not just on NEW. The stations they are on that are not owned by Infinity have to buy the show. Howard for example, does not make a shitload of cash for just KROCK. He makes it for Infinity across the country. That is how thier salaries are set, and how they justified.

No. They are making $100,000,000.00 and $130,000,000.00.

O&A are 6th, ratings came out today. Money isn't made in overall ratings anyway, overall #'s don't mean all that much in the bottom line, demos do, overall #'s are good for bragging rights and to see how the target demo is trending, but its the target demo where the $$ is made. O&A are #1 in NYC 18+. #1 in their target, O&A are also pulling monster #'s in Philly, Cleveland, Boston, Buffalo.

^ what Krahzee and slap nut said also…..

…… like most of you...I see OnA as the only credible successors of Infinity’s cash cow morning drive adult talk format when Howard retires….. that’s.. “if” Howard retires. It would seem that Infinity’s investment in OnA is for the long haul….and the target demo they capture is more important than their standing in the ratings.

What made Mel so successful is his gift of being able to look over the horizon and predict the future….once he made the commitment he wasn’t sidetracked with the bad news of today….or next week. Oh, ….and he also took full advantage of the telecom act of ’96…….but that’s a long boring story…….and one of my favorites. It’s also the reason why there’s no real competition (radio wars) anymore.

….another major fly in the ointment is Infinity’s failure in getting all the A-list adult talkers on one mega station. This would be the almost perfect national format…..very marketable.

What many people neglect to see though, is that the Market of Markets lies in NYC. Any DJ/Host anywhere in America right now would chew off their left arm for a chance to have show in NYC. If you're not posting the highest ratings in the demographic in NYC as compared to Philly (for example), that looks pretty bad.

Trust me, the fault doesn't lie with O&A. WNEW is probably not marketing the show as they could. As a listener from WYSP, I can say that the way O&A is marketed here is exactly how I was roped in a little over a year ago. Since then, I have received literally dozens of "word of mouth" referals from people just as hooked as I am.

I wonder if WNEW listeners can say the same?

To WNEW marketing is printing bumper stickers. There is no doubt that the WOW concept is the greatest radio promotion of all time, but a tv commercial every now and then wouldn't hurt. When they were the crappy rock of NY, you couldn't get away from their tv spots.

They already have the best methods of marketing (WOW stickers/word of mouth) as well as the cheapest. That's the real kicker. Why spend money when you don't have to?

If they want to do something, do it for the fans. O&A are really good about this. Mgmt is alway's going to be the fly in the ointment.

Bigger and better road shows would help out.

I think Karmazin should revamp that whole WNEW staff. It is a horrible station, that does nothing for its programs. There sales staff should really try to get better sponsers for the show.Until that is done O&A will never get higher then #3
