I was up driving unusually early this morning, so i had the displeasure of listening our Good friend Howard. It seems old buddy Howard has a new email feature on his show. Basically it's an e-mail address where people can send in comments on the show, and he and Gary will read the people's FEEDBACK, INSTANTLY, during the show. How clever of you Howard! That is a wonderful idea! It's good to know that people will remember you as the inventor of instant feedback!

Seriously though, I can't blame Howard for picking up Instant Feedback, since it's the next logical innovation for radio. Just too bad he didn't get the ability to invent it, sorry Howard, sloppy seconds again.....

I'm sorry I know everyone will tool on me for this but you gotta give props to Howard. Christ he pretty much invented the entire genre. O&A wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for him. True, Howard's lost his stuff, but I wouldn't start a tally of who had what invention first because the boys would definitely lose. Howard was great and we have him to thank for paving the way for O&A. They don't even compete during the same time slot... I don't understand this vicious dichotomy. Can't we all just get along? By the way, if you hate Howard so much, why were you listening to him in the first place? Let me guess, you were just "flipping through" the stations and you "happened" to hear about the instant feedback thing, right? I love people who say "I hate this show" yet somehow they know everything about it. O&A rock, Howard no longer does, but let's at least give him some credit for what he's done for radio.

I give Howard all the credit in the world for what he's done, but really, what HAS he done? Sure there have been some interesting bits over the years, but it's mainly all guy stuff. It's no so much that he innovated, it's just that he had the balls to push the envelope and pave the way for O&A. O&A wouldn't have come around without Howard? I doubt it. They do their show. Howard brought new things to the content of radio. O&A are doing that, adding more, and changing the format itself.

And also, no I wasn't "flipping through the channels", if i'm up in the morning I still do listen to Howard, simply because there's nothing else on. I've tried the Sports Guys and can't stand their voices, plus I'm not a huge sports fan other than hockey. Howard may only be funny once out of every 20 times, but he's still better than the "wacky Z-Morning zoo" *insert wacky horn here*

IB, I'm disappointed in you. Do you honestly believe that Howard was the first person to do radio like this? I mean, yes he did bring a great deal of popularity to it, and he's done quite well with it. But, I would hardly say that he innovated the genre.

I'm not really saying that he invented talk radio but he did pretty much mainstream it. I was just trying to make the point that even though Howard may be using some things the boys came up with, the reverse is at least equally true if not more. Matt said "sloppy seconds again" which makes it sound like he always copies them. Since he was doing radio while the boys were still in diapers, we know this isn't true.

steve dahl was the first to have naked chiks in the studio and imus was doing extreme talk before edit, so what exactly did edit invent?

I don't think Howard was doing radio in the late 60s.

It's kinda simple.

Howard didn't invent the genre. Howard didn't innovate the genre. Howard took a style from other jocks (Dahl and Imus) and molded it into his own. Then, in doing so, he made the "shock jock" genre EXPLODE. Nobody can deny that fact.

The thing about Howard is that he is, like Imus did before him, becoming a dinosaur. As Imus went downhill, the people flocked to Howard. Now the people are flocking to O&A and Howard stumbles. And the only thing keeping it from being all-out war is the fact that Howard is a control freak, and the most dangerous kind - a control freak who actually gets what he wants. This is keeping O&A down, because Howard knows how he got popular.

By fighting with Imus.

So he also knows that by fighting with O&A, he will lose just like Imus did. So he keeps the war off his back with a gag order.

I have a feeling that if O&A stay on WNEW in two months, one term may just be lifting the gag. Cause if CBS/WNEW won't lift it, they'll go to another company that won't have Howard control. That's when you see Howard, Don & Mike, Mancow, Leykis, and all the small local shockers bow to O&A.

I just reaaaally hope that if O&A do go to another station, without Stern-Control, it's in New York. If i'm not mistaken, Q104 is Clear Channel owned, correct? I really can't see them leaving NY, but it's not impossible.

I think that this has been hashed to death a number of times. But for those of you who don't remember the times before the gag order(In Bel), here's my 2 cents:
The boys DID INDEED give Howard the credit for pushing the envelope and giving them the oppertunity to do the kind of show that they do now. However, once they were thrown out of a press conference that Howard was having for "Son of the Beach" tensions started to build. (Sounds like a stuttering John bit?)
Alot happened since then leading to this "gag order" which would be too long winded to list. But, I hope this clears it up for the late commers to the battle.

I also noticed that Stern was using something
similar to Instant Feedback today. The
difference with him is that he is so out of touch
and will NEVER be able to innovate and use
the internet to his advantage. Stern is too out
of touch in my opinion. I think the creativity ran
out right around the time that the fairy tale
called Private Parts was being filmed.

the only reason he has it is to take other peoples jokes cuz he isn't funny he has to rip off his own listeners at least O&A give their listeners credit when they read the instant feedback

fatty,

You're right, we could all email stern w/ serious inquiries only. The only problem is that he probably doesn't actually read emails that come from real people, similar to the thing they do w/ their phone callers.

TFEC, I don't know about WRAT, but WDHA has a listening area of about 3 square blocks.

I don't think they'll find the support they're looking for at a small station like that...

I wouldn't count on Q104, not so long as Bob Buchmann is in charge. Though if it push comes to shove, Bucky or O & A should be a pretty obvious choice.

Ever wonder if the two shows are in cahootz. I highly doubt they are but I often wonder if they really were. It would be ingenious. What would be even better if they all put their beef aside and teamed up. They would kill. Could you Imagine O&A with Baba Boey. Thats would make for some interesting radio.

As for stern I was a long time fan, But lately in the past six months he has not been funny to me.

I'm usually one to have an open mind, but I just don't see this as reality - By now, if that were the case, i think it would've been made public by now.

besides, O&A don't wanna team up with them, they run their own show - bottom line.

Yeah thats true. I listen to both shows and wonder what or how funny they would be together.

As for O&A they are the new thing. They are alot funnier and upbeat. Howard stills has his moments but they are far and few. I would like to see Howard hang it up and try something else. Otherwise he will end up like Imus.
