I've been thinking. Some things in the FAQ are fine. Some things (specifically, reference to the "A Day in the Life..." thread) just do not belong there at all.

I'm thinking we might want to get all our heads together on this. Pick out what should stay, what should go, what should be added.

Keep in mind, the FAQ should probably be written to answer questions for someone who just joined today.

Things I'm thinking of adding:

-Official blue threads
-Where to test your sig
-Post count doesn't REALLY matter (?)
-Perhaps move things around, like the section about how to avoid being tooled on closer to the top

I've also made the FAQ link bold and blue, as you probably noticed. I'm also thinking of having a person automatically forwarded to the FAQ upon registration. It could help things out.

This way, with a good FAQ, more prominent link, and an inability to COMPLETELY ignore it, people will have less excuse to complain about being tooled on.

Or... this can just become a gay sex thread like all my other BTS posts. :D But hey, I'm just the newbie mod. Heh.

Automatic forwarding to the FAQ upon registration sounds good.

I was talking to Matt last night. And my idea, which he kindly didn't laugh at me about, is that in addition to the Official threads, we add a couple of more "wacky" colored threads.

For example, the next Pressureunderfire that joins we can rate his thread with an Enemy rating, meaning flame on! We can also rate a thread from someone such as my icon Armymad with an Ass-monkey rating. Further, we can point out a spammer with a Spam label. You get the idea.

That way posters may be informed of the nature of the thread before they even open it. Of course this could have the reverse effect of feeding some dumbasses ego, but I think overall it would be a fun experiment.

Further, in reference to Fez's thread of this morning, which I'm too lazy to post a reply to separately (sorry Fez), this may be a simple way for us to make a statement without sounding like Chicken Little. (OK, facey, just for you...Chicken Little was the one who kept crying, "the sky is falling, the sky is falling." Not to be confused with the Little Engine that could.

Anyway, I was just missing all the little icons you used to be able to post next to a thread, you know like on CDIH and the old info-pop Board.

I don't know if the general membership will like this, but I would have fun with it.

OK, flame on motherbitches and feel the wrath! Die!

I think we need an entire image makeover.

I hate the little exclamation point.

Image makeover is cool too. Hey, I've got Photoshop. Heh. So, what do we want it to look like? New color scheme all around maybe? New post reply/edit/erase buttons?

Also I'm thinking it's time (and many have said this before) to take "New Topic" away from "Post Reply". If "New Topic" in the forum list isn't good enough for them, too bad. Heh.

I do like BM's idea of more ratings. And it's really easy to do.

Guess it's time to change the thread title...

Yeah, some new colors & buttons sounds good.

Then we can work on the new ratings stuff.

I was thinking a special boob rating for the WOW board myself.

I think you need to present the FAQ so they actually read it. Who here truthfully ever reads, FAQ's, Disclaimers, Agreements or any of that shit? We click the agree button and just move on.

Maybe present the FAQ as a flash, with some interaction. Something so we know they are actually reading this shit. Maybe link each FAQ point to a thread where the point can be illustrated on the board itself. Like spamming, link to a spammers thread where he gets torn.

Of all the classes that stand face to face with the bourgeoisie today, the proletariat alone is a genuinely revolutionary class. The other classes decay and finally disappear in the face of Modern Industry; the proletariat is its special and essential product. The lower middle class, the small manufacturer, the shopkeeper, the artisan, the peasant, all these fight against the bourgeoisie, to save from extinction their existence as fractions of the middle class. They are therefore not revolutionary, but conservative. Nay, more, they are reactionary, for they try to roll back the wheel of history. If, by chance, they are revolutionary, they are only so in view of their impending transfer into the proletariat; they thus defend not their present, but their future interests; they desert their own standpoint to place themselves at that of the proletariat. The "dangerous class", the social scum, that passively rotting mass thrown off by the lowest layers of the old society, may, here and there, be swept into the movement by a proletarian revolution; its conditions of life, however, prepare it far more for the part of a bribed tool of reactionary intrigue.

It doesn't matter where you put the FAQ or how you dress it up. Less than a fraction of the people who come to the board will read it. And they will only then go and read it if they have a specific question.

Anything is worth a try, I personally don't think how much you dress up the board it will not change the problems we face. But anything is worth a try, it's a simple procedure to add atleast the links and maybe simplify it even more. Even if it helps to make 20% more people read it.

Yeah, its the ability (I'm not sure how) to merge two threads

http://www.nancies.org's boards have them.

What fez is trying to say I think is when you have two similar threads. Both are good threads but you need to lock one of them, yet you want to add the locked threads posts into the one you will leave open. Thus then merging the two threads, which is something I believe was on the old board and would be a great addition.

Yeah, it was an old Infopop feature. You could also move posts within a thread up or down as needed.

Thank you BM, your knowledge on kiddie literature will really help you out later in life. The merging thing sounds like a good idea, it was helpful in the infopop days and would have been a great feature and will be one when show contests start and we get the inevitable, 14 threads by 14 different contestants asking us to vote for them. and btw, what happened to eliminating the stars from the official thread feature. I thought ftl was working on that after I asked slash about it and then it just stopped. Just looking for some info, not pissed or anything

FTL removed the stars and added them back. He, and only he can answer as to why.

Write To Me Here

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

It was the font that made the letters blurry-looking, not the stars. I did fade the stars a bit more.

Maybe I should just do what Jeff did on RF.net and make it so you can't tell it's an official thread till you hover your mouse over it... genius, huh?

Bringing it up.

I was wondering if it would be possible to make some app that changes borken pic sig links to a small version of the site's banner, or better yet one saying to fix their sig.

I don't think there's any way that Internet Explorer or the code can know whether a pic works or not. The URL is up to the person.
