While I'm in a BTS mood, there are a few code issues I'd like to run by you guys.

-Login cookie: I'm sure you've noticed that when the "Thank you for logging in, you may now continue" page was taken away, the cookie (saving username/password) stopped working. To get around this, I'm thinking of bringing back a "Thank you"-ish page, only instead of clicking on the button, you get redirected automatically.

-Thread consolidation: Fez brought this up a while ago and Moosen reminded me of it last night. The ability to move all messages from one thread into another and delete that thread. I think it can be done BUT it would make threads very confusing to read, as there would be two separate threads' worth of posts in one place.... even though the topics are kinda the same, it could be really strange.

-Recycle Bin: When something gets deleted, it doesn't really. It gets moved here, a forum only mods can see when logged in. And as protection, so you can't just delete a post and then kill it from the bin, impose a limit. A post can't be deleted out of the bin unless it's been there for 5 days, but it can be moved elsewhere.

Just thoughts..... let me know what you think about these and post other ideas if you have them...

Here's another one I just thought of. As a service to our board members who surf from work and are afraid they'll get caught with a naughty banner - "opieanthony.com/work" - the catch would be, it's only available from 8am to 6pm. All other times, they have to deal with the crap. It would also be a toned-down version of the site - perhaps the old colors, or some version of them.

This is just a REALLY rough idea, like I said I don't know if the time-limiting is even possible, but people would appreciate it.

By the way, the time-limiting would be so people can't surf the work version ALL the time. :)

Login cookie - Sounds good to me.

Thread consolidation – It’s a great idea especially when GD right now is a mess but the thread would make no sense.

FTL my ideas:

New Search IP button - I told you about this already but just wanted to see what everybody else thought. When viewing a members profile have an IP search button right next to their IP.

Redirects – This might be a stretch how about when posting a message and it says thank you blah blah blah the link is below to click back to the thread, can the redirect go back to the correct page not just the first one? Would help in the chat threads.

I'd have to look into redirecting to the last page but it might be possible. I'm also thinking of adding an anchor tag that could be used in Search or for that redirect. I'm sure you've all seen a URL with #whatever at the end of it, which automatically pulls you down to a certain point on the page (example: http://www.opieanthony.com/faq.cfm#sig ) >edit: oops<... I could probably make an anchor out of the MessageID number, so it would be unique to every message. The only thing to figure out (for search) would be how to get it onto that page, but I can muck about the code.

IP button should also be doable (I think) if I can get it to work the same way it does on the Newest 100 list.

Also, I guess sooner or later I can get to rounding out that list a little more, give it some of the functionality I've been putting off, like date range search and member number range search. I know that would make someone a very happy Moron.

I like the Recycle Bin idea, I think that would be a good way to clear up some problems back here.

I have no problem with bringing back a thank you page to ensure that the cookie's work. It's a small price to pay.

I think thread consolidation could make things way too confusing. I think it would be more trouble than it's worth.

Joey, you are such a lazy bitch.

Would ya rather "psycho" over "lazy"? Huh? Well??

AIM: SmarterChild

Write To Me Here

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

OpieAnthony.com/work

You guys don't mind being guinea pigs for the work site, do ya?

It's up, give it a shot. Let me know if there's anything that doesn't work, doesn't look right, images that don't show up. Admin tools are still linked to the BLACK-background pages so that is not a bug, just my lazy ass not feeling like retooling them too.

Time restriction isn't in effect yet cause I want to work the bugs out of any code or files that need to be copied first. Then I'll worry about that.

It works the same as the regular site, just a different look to it, toned-down so as not to be so noticeable while browsing at work. That includes no ad banners and no OTL box. But you should be able to browse, post, do anything you want. Matter of fact I'm writing this post from it. The only thing is - sigs are still there. That's cause sigs are inserted as text into a post (as you've probably noticed when you edit a post).... the only way around that would be to switch to CDIH-style, make the sig a separate entity from the post. It's doable, but anything posted BEFORE that change is made will still have the inserted text. Any thoughts on that?

Anyway, have fun, let me know how it works out for ya.

And is anyone else as scared as I am that I completely redesigned the site in one night?

Login cookie - Sounds good to me

Recycle bin - Once again, I like it. Sounded like a great idea when you told me about it in IMs.

Thread consolidation - Personally, I like the idea. It would only be used for those times when these assholes start 10-20 new threads all on the same subject. If it gets confusing, then that's their fucking fault. Maybe they should use a fraction of their brain first.

opieanthony.com/work - These people can't get on because the content may be unsuitable to their bosses? Ummm hello, they are at WORK! Maybe they should be doing their fucking job instead of playing around on a goddamn message board! Sorry, but I don't believe in catering to anyone. Deal with it I say.

IP search - All I can say about this is our FTL is an awesome FTL. Sure laziness is a factor, but if it makes our lives easier and speeds things up, I'm all for it.

Okay, I think I covered all of them. Great job FTL.

Fuck you, Flock. :-D /work is already done. And screw it, at this point any posting is just GOOD TRAFFIC.... except for this D&M fiasco, the board's been pretty quiet. So even if they're at work, let them post... not our fault if they get fired.

I'd like to apologize to FTL for my comments about /work earlier. That really wasn't fair of me and I'm sorry.

Like I told him in IM's shortly after, it was more of a jealousy thing causing me to lash out like that. I wish I could sit around and surf the board all day at work myself. God knows there have been times when I heard something on the show and needed to get on right away to say something, but couldn't. That really pisses me off and that is what led to my outburst.

Once again, I'm sorry FTL and great job on all the new features.

Also created and hid the Recycle Bin forum. I need to make some edits to the database to add support for the 5-day waiting period before a message can be removed from the bin, but I will start working on deleted messages going there instead of, well, nowhere.

Read "Lent's OT Thread". Right now tagging doesn't do as much as I'd like it to - if I get some more time I'd like to have a warning pop up if, say, you're trying to move or delete a tagged thread (tagged by someone other than you, of course) - and perhaps even have you get emailed if someone else does something with a thread you tagged.
