I know that people like to think anything that happened a long time ago is better or more important than things that happen now. Baseball was better, people were nicer, politicians more honest, the Civil Rights energized the whole country, blah blah blah.

I don't care what anyone says, this is not even comparable to Pearl Harbor. This is much much worse.

--The Pearl Harbor attack occured during an existing war. It wasn't as much of a shock.
--It happened to military personel; The victims were people who knowingly signed up for the army thus assuming some facet of risk. The people here were just going to work, or sitting atop the building to marvel at the view.
--It happened at a military facility and over water, and was pretty easy to get to. The people who were directly affected were family members of soldiers. The descruction was miniscule compared to what happened in NY. In this case, Our entire economy has shut down, and the day to day life of millions of Americans has been completely changed forever.
--I honestly have no idea how many people died during the attack on Pearl Harbor, but there has to be at least 10x the death toll here.
--When the Japanese hit us, we knew who enemy was immediately, and what our next step was. Here, everyone is in a panic, because no one knows who did it, if they're done, how we stop them, how we get them back. The uncertainty is what's really messing up a lot of people here.

Anyone else want to compare the two?

Hey Greed...we only lost like 2000 - 3000 in Pearl Harbor...the main target of that attack was our boats and planes...

What happened on Tuesday was a massacre compared to that...also they didn't attack our military strength they attacked our ideals and our heritage...

Pearl Harbor was an attack on our military. This was an attack on our way of life, an attack on our being Americans.

It was an attack on our freedom to be Americans, they basicly kicked us in the nuts while we were sleeping.

When Pearl Harbor is used as a reference, it's used in the sense of a "sneak attack". Not how many or who was killed.

I wasn't aware we were at war then. To say it wasn't a shock means you better study your history.

Pearl Harbor was not easy to get to in 1941.The destruction was minuscule? They destroyed almost our entire Navy. Every Americans life was changed that day. We were thrust into war.

It happened at a military facility
I think the Pentagon can be classified as a military target.

In ways they are different. In ways the are the same. Do not belittle Pearl Harbor

Not to Down grade the Pearl Harbor attack. That also was a sad time in history for America. We did loss many Military personal. I agree with most of the responses that this was the worst attack and blood shed on American soil done by another country or non-American. Many civilians died and property damaged. My heart goes out to everyone in the USA.

Pearl Harbor was a tragedy... I am not going to say that it wasn't.

But this was the first attack on civillians by an outside source on American soil in a long time ((or ever)). We discussed this for so long today at school.

They made us register to vote today, and I'm not even 18. I'm so fucking scared, what if they make the draft manditory again, and require females to enlist.

I just want this over.

I never meant to belittle the impact of Pearl Harbor. That was a massive attack, and a massive blow to the US which changed the country forever. My point wasn't to mitigate that, but to elevate the imhpact of this.

The Pearl Harbor attack occured during a war. I didn't say that the US was at war, just that it was during war time. There was a world war going on, and it was generally accpeted knowledge that the US was just waiting to enter the war.

In regards to the destruction. I didn't say it was miniscule. I said it was miniscule compared to that of this attack. There were a handful of ships that were attacked. It was nowhere near our entire navy.

Finally, the draft is still around, but no one will be called. We don't need it. We have the largest armed forces in the world. There isn't going to be trouble finding a sufficient amount of people wanting blood ready to enlist.

The Japanese never actually intented to do a sneak attack they were to give a half hour warning. But it somehow stopped from certain hardliners or maybe it was an accident. When the pilots found out they were upset. As cruel as the Japanese were during WW2(oh and they were fucking disgusting with their torture) they never wanted to attack a sleeping "samurai".
