Some of the country's biggest stars are putting on a show to raise money for victims of last week's World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks.

George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Hanks, Bon Jovi, Robert De Niro and Clint Eastwood are some of the bold-faced names who have agreed to appear on "America: A Tribute to Heroes," scheduled for 9 p.m. Friday.

Bruce Springsteen will pay tribute to some real working class heroes on Friday.
The event will be broadcast live from studios in New York and Los Angeles, although the organizers are not disclosing the exact locations for security reasons.

Although tickets to either venue would fetch a substantial amount of money, there will be no audience. Viewers will be asked to pledge money by phone while watching from home.

This decision was based on logistics and because the producers do not want to further burden the New York Police Department, already strapped after the attacks, with handling crowd control.

The four major networks — ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox — put the show together yesterday and will underwrite it. UPN and the WB are also expected to carry the show.

Radio stations and cable networks are invited to join the simulcast, which will be a milestone in broadcast history. While there have been some cross-network simulcasts — in 1958 there was a benefit for Hungarian relief that aired on three networks — never before have so many outlets joined to deliver one telecast. The show will run two hours, without commercial interruption.

The idea for the benefit was hatched over the weekend and hammered out yesterday afternoon.

DreamWorks SKG co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg has promised to gather the top Hollywood names, while music mogul Jimmy Iovine has tapped that industry for performers, according to sources.

Each of the television networks will have two stars appear on the show.

CBS stars Amy Brenneman ("Judging Amy") and Ray Romano ("Everybody Loves Raymond") are on the bill, as are NBC's Kelsey Grammer ("Frasier") and Conan O'Brien ("Late Night"). ABC's Dennis Franz ("NYPD Blue") and Sela Ward ("Once and Again") will be there, too.

All funds raised from the program will go to the relief effort, although the exact charities have yet to be determined, according to the organizers.

Headliners

The following performers are taking part in the Friday fund-raiser for the victims of last week's terrorist attacks:

Bon Jovi, Amy Brenneman, Jim Carrey, George Clooney, Sheryl Crow, Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Dixie Chicks, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Calista Flockhart, Dennis Franz, Kelsey Grammer, Tom Hanks, Faith Hill, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Conan O'Brien, Tom Petty, Ray Romano, Julia Roberts, Paul Simon, Will Smith, Bruce Springsteen, Sela Ward, Robin Williams, Stevie Wonder and Neil Young.

You'll probably see a lot of the musical acts play songs together, that will save time and allow them to play longer.

This Sucks,
It just stinks of a bunch of media whores trying to get in the spotlight. A competition to see who can cry the most.
It's not an original thought but these dicks don't need to sing and dance to raise money. Money is pouring in from all over.
Just shut the fuck up Hollywood....If you want to do something write a check.

If they really want to impress me, they should make a real and genuine sacrifice....like sitting in every chair in Giants Stadium....
If only each of the Sports Guys "One Million Listeners" would send a dollar.... I'm thinking that's at least a couple cases of Poland Spring

And seriously, do the networks think they're proving something? WTF is 2 hours? What's so important that's on at 8 o'clock that it can't be pre-empted? Go from noon to midnight, that'll show us you give a shit. I'll still probably watch, though...

So I guess this means there's no hope on TV tonight. Oh well it will only be worth it to see Mariah lose her mind. Pray for the Gods of insanity to shine upon us this eve.

Opie made refernece to this being on radio so does this mean that Ron and Fez are going to be pre-empted so we can hear celebrities say that what happened was a tragedy?

red rocket--you asked why stars don't donate money. for what it's worth, rosie o'donnell (personal feelings aside please) donated one million of HER OWN MONEY as did Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. Their contributions didn't come from a charity fund, it came from their bank accounts.

Ken's Pen--are you saying more money shouldn't come in? I don't think there could ever be enough money--and the more people that are persuaded to give MORE money--no matter what the means--the better.

And while celebrities opinions don't count any more than ours,we do ask them what they think and how it has affected them.. Even O and A did it today while talking to Mike from Staind. If we didn't care about their opinions, we wouldn't ask them. Many times, they are able to voice what we--as the "regular" people--cannot.

I admit I will watch it. I will also tape it (i spent forever working on the VCR set up--i AM a girl :) I will watch it because I am curious, because I like a lot of the talent and because I support the idea (it was put together in a week--thats pretty amazing). I will tape it to show my children someday and I will tape it because something like this has never happened before.

Sorry this is so long, but I feel people are too quick to criticize instead of being grateful and appreciative of what ALL people--famous or not--are doimg to help America.

It's not who you love, but how.

It will be very interesting to see if a QUICKLY planned show is better than the Godawful Oscars or Emmys. Maybe spontaneity will be our friend tonight. This may even create some "O&A Silent Game" caliber uncomfortable moments.
Bottom line, crappy or not, it's history in the making. And it's going to collect a shitload of good money for a good cause.

It's been very hastily planned. From the interviews I've seen most of the performers don't even know what's going to happen.

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE???

While I am not someone who usually supports this elitist group, I think what they are doing is DAMNED ADMIRABLE!!! At this time they are just like the rest of America looking for a way to help. And I think that they are doing great!! Even if the entertainment might suck at times, think of the cause: helping the families of more than 300 true HEROES, who tried to help, forgetting their responsibilities to themselves and their own families!!

Instead of being so fucking immature, why don't you call the number and contribute!! Then maybe you would have even the slightest place to gripe!!

I understand this is for charity and all, but did I really need to hear from Enrique Iglesias and the raisin on his cheek?
Did anybody else notice Natalie Imbrulia was one of the backup singers for U2?
