New virus poses as war vote
By Reuters
September 24, 2001, 1:10 p.m. PT

Security experts on Monday warned of a new
file-deleting virus masquerading as a
program that allows people to vote on whether
the United States should go to war.

The "Vote Virus" is spreading via e-mail to
users of Microsoft's Outlook e-mail program,
said Simon Perry, vice president of security
solutions at Computer Associates
International.

The virus appears with the subject line:
"Peace between America and Islam!" and the
body of the e-mail reads: "Hi. Is it a war
against America or Islam!? Let's vote to live in
peace!" Perry said.

When the attachment entitled "WTC.exe" is
opened, the virus deletes all the files on the
computer's hard drive and sends copies of the
original e-mail message to every address
listed in the computer's address book, he
said.

The virus also defaces any Web pages that
are hosted by an infected computer to read:
"America...few days will show you what we can
do!!! It's our turn Zaker is so sorry for you."

The virus is believed to be the work of an
opportunist and not associated with the Sept.
11 jetliner attacks on the World Trade Center
and the Pentagon that left more than 6,000
people dead or missing.

"There is no evidence that this is related to the
people who carried out" the attacks, Perry
said.

"We feel this is likely to get quite a high pickup
in that a lot of people are going to click on
this," he said. "If the news about this doesn't
get out before people get their e-mails, they're
at risk."

Perry said he expects there will be more
socially engineered viruses created in the
future that will take advantage of people's
interest in the attacks and the subsequent
political and military repercussions.

"What this is, is a sick sense of humor," Perry
said. "Chances are this is not any kind of
cyberterrorism. It's just cyberterror."

As many as 10 large corporate customers of
Computer Associates have been infected
since the virus first appeared Monday
morning, Perry said. Researchers do not
know where it originated, but it has not yet hit
Europe and Asia, he said.

Yes, yes, of course everyone knows I *have* to post here, as I always do.

But hey, usually it's for hoaxes - THIS ONE IS REAL, FOLKS!

The virus is called W32.Vote.A and can be QUITE dangerous. To sum up, once you run WTC.exe, two Visual Basic scripts infect your computer. One is set to run the next time your computer boots Windows - AND IS PROGRAMMED TO DELETE ALL FILES FOR YOUR WINDOWS FOLDER.

That will FUCK YOUR COMPUTER UP.

Microsoft Outlook users - it will also email itself to EVERYONE in your Contact list.

As usual, no threat to Macs or anything else non-Windows.

Get full info on it here:

Actually, it ends up running "Format c:". Not good. I'd say that anytime someone sends you an email typed like this (mixed captial and lower case letters):

Hi
iS iT A waR Against AmeriCa Or IsLaM !?
Let's Vote To Live in Peace!

There is a pretty good chance there is a virus attached.

I dunno man, that's not what it says on Symantec's site. They say it tries to delete everything in the Windows folder.

Format C: wouldn't work while in Windows, anyway. At least I highly doubt it would. Not with files open and such.

It formats your C: when you try to reboot.

Here is what was sent around at my work today.
There is a new virus going around. Our anti-virus vendor has not yet updated protection. However IT has been filtering for the attachment at the incoming mail servers since yesterday.

How it works:
Vote arrives as an e-mail with the following information:
Subject: Fwd: Peace BeTween AmeriCa And IsLam
Body: Hi! iS iT A waR Against AmeriCa Or IsLam! Let's Vote To Live in Peace!
Attached: WTC.EXE
If the attached file is opened, Vote will install two .vbs files on the hard drive.
MixDaLaL.vbs will attempt to overwrite all files ending with .htm or .html with the following phrase:
AmeRiCa ...Few Days WiLL Show You What We Can Do !!! It's Our Turn > > > ZaCkEr is So Sorry For You.

The second .vbs file, ZaCker.vbs, will add a line to the registry that will run the vbs script the next time the computer is rebooted. ZaCker.vbs attempts to delete all files in the Windows directory and add a Format C: command to the autoexec.bat file. It will also display the following message:
I promiss We WiLL Rule The World Again...By The Way,You Are Captured By ZaCker!!!"

God Bless The USA.

FTL, from sarc.com:
quote:

When executed at the next restart, this file will attempt to delete all files in the \Windows folder. Next, the worm will create or overwrite the file C:\Autoexec.bat. Inside the file there will be a command that formats the C drive. The Autoexec.bat file is executed on Windows 95/98/Me and DOS systems when you start the computer.

Uh, no. It's because not enough people use Macs (which are essentially now Linux/Unix computers thanks to OS X), Linux, Unix, __________ (Insert obscure OS here), etc... for a hacker to spend thier valuable time writing a virus to infect less than 10% of the personal computers on the planet. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a Dual G4 Mac, but they are just too damn expensive when compared to a PC of the same stature.

Point taken.

I haven't looked on SARC since yesterday, and they didn't have a load of info at the time. Guess it's been edited since.

Woo hoo! Format C: baybee!

Well yeah. Why waste your time writing a virus for a computer that already doesn't work on its own, when you could write a virus that will spread more and do the most damage on computers that have many incredibly stupid users who will click your virus without thinking because their computer is supposed to do the thinking for them?

Oh, that, and the fact that a hacker would be shunned and laughed at by all his friends if he admitted that he owned a stinkin' Mac. :)
