O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 ![]() | U.S. OFFICIALS POSTPONE MILITARY STRIKES By NILES LATHEM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- September 28, 2001 -- WASHINGTON - Major geo-political problems and the lack of hard information on the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden have forced the Bush administration to delay military strikes in Afghanistan. Officials told The Post the Pentagon initially planned the first wave of retaliatory assaults for as early as this week - at the end of the official 12-day mourning period for attack victims and after the conclusion of Pope John Paul II's visit to Central Asia. Military commanders - aware the viciously cold and snowy Afghan winter is about to begin - had quickly assembled the largest attack force since the Persian Gulf War. But in a series of briefings to NATO ministers and congressional leaders on Wednesday, officials signaled an attack on Afghanistan is not imminent. "I think it can't be stressed enough that everybody who's waiting for military action needs to rethink this thing," Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said. Military and diplomatic officials say complex logistical and diplomatic problems have surfaced - chief among them are the lack of intelligence on where bin Laden is hiding and the scarcity of "hard targets" in Afghanistan's impoverished, mountainous countryside. Pentagon sources said Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman John Shelton last week ordered planners to go back to the drawing boards because he was not comfortable with the list of Afghan targets they had selected. Also contributing to the delays has been Saudi Arabia's reluctance to allow raids to be staged from its giant Prince Sultan air base - built with U.S. funds by a construction company owned by bin Laden's billionaire father. But that's under negotiation, and The Washington Post reports today that a breakthrough may be near. Another major problem involves the complex alliances the United States is trying to set up inside Afghanistan. U.S. forces must work closely with the anti-Taliban rebels of the Northern Alliance to gain vital intelligence and ground support. But Pakistan, another key country in the war effort, has sent military advisers to Afghanistan to help the Taliban - and the country opposes any combat operations that would strengthen its enemies. ![]()

I don't want to piss everyone off, but the fact is even if we kill him, its the thinking of the people who follow and believe in him that we have to change. We kill him, he becomes their martyr, and we'll just get attacked again in his name. Look at all of the people that have been getting arrested and picked up WORLD-WIDE. Aside from the tragedy that happened on US soil two weeks ago, this is not solely a US vs Taliban-Afghan war. We need to have solid alliances throughout the world in order to take some serious military action, because if we end up pissing off one of our allies, its going to open a whole other can of shit. I just pray that in the interim US security nationwide keeps tight and vigilant in their efforts to keep us secure in our day to day lives. ![]() I've got two open seats. Psychopath Registered: Aug. 01 ![]() | Where did you get that story? CNN is reporting this right now. WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. and British special forces have conducted operations in Afghanistan and the Central Asian region, a senior administration official told CNN on Friday. CNN Senior White House Correspondent John King reported that a senior Bush administration official said the operations took place "in the region" and "in country," meaning Afghanistan. The official characterized the operations as part of routine special operations deployment that always accompany any U.S. military deployments overseas. Reports of special operations were first reported in the Pakistani press and in Friday's editions of USA Today. A senior U.S. official has confirmed those reports to CNN. CNN is sensitive about reporting information that could jeopardize lives and ongoing military operations. It is CNN's policy not to report the specifics of imminent or real-time military actions when told by appropriate authorities that this could jeopardize lives or ongoing operations. The operations are intelligence or reconnaissance-related, possibly to scout the terrain and look for places for helicopters to land or possible targets for airstrikes. King reported the administration official said, "We have an intelligence deficit here." U.S. military special operations units include U.S. Army Rangers, Navy Seals, Army Special Forces and the supersecret Delta Force ![]() Land of the free, Home of the Brave.

I dont think that we want to have other nations left out because this is a global problem. Without thier support we would have to wage war in in 20 other countries. God to think that 2 weeks ago i was worried about the redskins and did not have a clue where afghanistan was. ![]() Just add water Ill either get hard or my lunch will get wet

I'm not saying people shouldn't care about sports or music or anything that might be deemed superfluous in contrast to what happened, but I think this country, politicians and leaders included, need to always keep things into perspective. Think about it, if Clinton were still in office today, and lets say the whole Monica scandal broke out a month or so before the attack - how idiotic would we have looked? In my mind, I like to think of 9/11/2001 as a date that America and Americans got a wake up call - we need to stop burying ourselves in issues like who is screwing who, and whats ok to say and not to say, and we need to start re-fortifying our nation through improved secuirty, better intelligence gathering, and above all (IMO), continued support of our military and local Police/Firefighters/Teachers. Without these people, our children wouldn't be well educated, and our lives wouldn't be nearly as good as they have been. Sorry to get on a soap-box, but I was having this conversation with a co-worker this morning, and he said essentially the same thing Cementbag did (referring to the Yankees though), and I felt the need to get my view posted. ![]() I've got two open seats. O&A Board Veteran Registered: Jan. 01 ![]() | Do you think the American people will still be behind the president if they wait 5-6 months before striking. They should strike while the American people are still in favor of a "WAR". If they wait to long Bush might not get the support he needs. ![]() A NEW DAY OF INFAMY MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILY & FRIENDS OF LOST ONES
