NBC Worker Tests Positive for Anthrax

WASHINGTON (AP) - An employee of NBC in New York has tested positive for anthrax, the network said Friday. The FBI (news - web sites) and CDC are investigating.

The anthrax is not the same respiratory anthrax that killed a Florida man, NBC News said in a statement.

The employee tested positive for a cutaneous - skin - anthrax infection. The employee, a woman who was not identified, has received treatment and is responding well, the network said.

A source close to the investigation said the CDC has received a possible report of anthrax but that it is not confirmed.

CDC spokeswoman Barbara Reynolds referred all calls to the New York City Health Department, which is investigating.

NBC said the employee is in no danger and should recover fully, the network said.

The network said it had received some suspicious mail and immediately contacted the FBI, CDC and the New York Department of Health.

``The mail was tested by these organizations, and the employee was treated by several physicians. All these tests came back negative,'' said the NBC statement. ``However, this morning, a later test on the employee came back positive for traces of cutaneous anthrax.''

Anthrax case reported in New York

NBC employee tests positive after handling ‘suspicious mail’

NBC, MSNBC AND NEWS SERVICES

NEW YORK, Oct. 12 — An NBC News employee has tested positive for anthrax after handling “suspicious mail” that was sent to NBC’s New York headquarters, network officials said Friday. The case of “cutaneous anthrax” — which is contracted through the skin rather than by breathing — is being investigated by the FBI and federal and local health officials, the network said.

‘We have no reason to believe that this particular incident has spread beyond this individual employee.’
— NBC MEMO

WORD OF THE FOURTH recent case of anthrax in the United States came in a memo from top NBC executives Robert Wright and Andrew Lack and said the employee was being treated with antibiotics and was expected to make a full recovery.
“We have no reason to believe that this particular incident has spread beyond this individual employee,” the memo said.
The memo indicated that tests were conducted at NBC’s headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Center in recent days after “suspicious mail was received.”
It said that the New York City Department of Health, the federal Centers for Disease Control and the FBI were contacted and the mail was tested.
“All these tests came back negative. However, this morning, a later test on the employee came back positive for traces of cutaneous anthrax,” the memo said.
New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was expected to discuss the case at a news conference later Friday.

FIRST CASE OUTSIDE FLORIDA
The anthrax case was the first recent one reported outside Florida, where investigators have been attempting to identify the source of the deadly bacteria that has been detected in three workers at a company that publishes tabloid newspapers. One of the employees died of the disease.

The FBI reported Thursday that investigators have found traces of anthrax in the mailroom of the company’s office. As theories swirled about the origin of the anthrax, officials said there was no evidence it was stolen from a laboratory.
Federal officials began a criminal investigation into the source of anthrax contamination at the Boca Raton headquarters of American Media after a third person — 36-year-old Stephanie Dailey — tested positive for exposure Wednesday night.
Dailey, who worked in the mailroom of the tabloid The Sun with Ernesto Blanco, 73, who also had anthrax spores in his nasal passages, returned to work in temporary offices Thursday.
“I just want to say I’m fine,” she told a crowd of reporters from her front yard in nearby Boynton Beach.
She is taking antibiotics and has shown no symptoms of anthrax disease. Blanco has been in good condition in the hospital receiving antibiotics since Monday. Dailey refused to discuss how she may have come into contact with the bacteria, citing the ongoing investigation. She is an office services associate whose duties include receiving packages and delivering the mail.

Dailey was one of more than 1,000 people tested for the germ by health officials after anthrax spores were found on the computer keyboard of Bob Stevens, 63, a photo editor at the paper. Stevens died Friday of a rare, inhaled form of the disease.
In Washington, Tim Caruso, deputy assistant director of the FBI counterterrorism division, told a subcommittee of the House intelligence committee on Thursday that anthrax was found in “a number of locations” within the building housing the firm’s editorial and management offices.
Anthrax bacteria can be seen in this microscopic view.
The cases have sparked fear in affluent Boca Raton in Palm Beach County, a place of well-to-do retirees, manicured golf courses and villas a world away from the arid and impoverished mountains of Afghanistan where the plot to attack the United States on Sept. 11 was allegedly hatched by Osama bin Laden.
But the FBI said there was no evidence linking the anthrax to a terrorist group. Officials said they are treating it like a murder investigation — starting by asking who might have wanted to kill Stevens.
Health officials also emphasized that there is no public health threat — anthrax is not contagious and the contamination is limited to the American Media building, which has been ordered closed for 30 days.
Investigators wearing white biohazard suits and gas masks have been collecting evidence in the offices since Sunday. Environmental sources of the spores have been ruled out, heightening concerns that foul play was involved.

TRACKING THE STRAIN
Earlier this week a federal official who asked not to be identified said that the Florida anthrax was similar to a strain collected in Iowa during the 1950s. That led to speculation that the attackers could have used the “Ames strain,” an especially virulent form of anthrax taken from a sick animal at Iowa State University about that time. There were even erroneous reports that it might have been stolen from an Iowa laboratory.

But the FBI put those stories to rest on Thursday.
“At this time there is no information concerning any link to Iowa,” said Larry Holmquist, an FBI spokesman in Omaha, Neb.
Attorney General John Ashcroft also downplayed reports that the germ had been stolen.
“I have absolutely no evidence to indicate that the anthrax in Florida was stolen from any lab,” he said on NBC’s “Today Show.”

Scientists are using new methods to compare the genetic fingerprint of the anthrax spores to known strains of the bacteria.
Vito Del Vecchio, a bacteriologist at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, said Thursday that federal authorities have asked him to apply a second DNA fingerprinting method to the Florida samples, an indication that their identity probably has not yet been pinpointed.
Even if researchers identify the strain, the information will not necessarily tell the FBI where it was obtained.

“That would be very, very difficult to ascertain, if it was a research strain, because most of the strains that we use for research purposes are used by a lot of laboratories,” said Dr. Jill Trewella of Los Alamos National Laboratories.
In fact, laboratories routinely share strains. Dozens of labs in the United States and around the world have collections of hundreds of strains.
Still, knowing the strain is a major clue. If the FBI has a suspect there would be traces in the person’s home, office or car and tell-tale antibodies in the blood.
A sweep of items belonging to Mohamed Atta — a suspect in one of the Sept. 11 hijackings who flew planes near the site of the anthrax case — and a screening of the other 18 suspected hijackers’ possessions, cars and hotel rooms turned up no evidence that they came in contact with anthrax or other biochemical agents, officials said.

EMPLOYEE TESTING
Meanwhile, hundreds of American Media employees await test results to see if they’ve been exposed. Many were given antibiotics as a preventive measure. Authorities said there could be more cases of employees who test positive since the lab results are only just beginning to come in.
The anthrax bacterium normally has an incubation period of up to seven days, but could take up to 60 days to develop.
“We’re just taking our pills. That’s all we can do,” said Donnie Gilbert, an executive assistant at Star magazine. “I’m as bewildered as the next person.”

Inhalation anthrax is extremely rare, but also extremely lethal if not treated with antibiotics in the early stages. Symptoms of inhalation anthrax begin with a cough, but rapidly progress into severe breathing problems and shock. Initially it can be confused with the flu. Without treatment, 90 percent of victims die within days.
Only 18 inhalation cases of anthrax in the United States were documented in the 20th century, the most recent in 1976, in California.

NBC’s Robert Bazell, The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Sure, this email warning may have been a hoax...

actual virus through actual mail, has anyone heard this yet? - Klingerman Virus - Posted by MrQuotes on 9-30-01

...but now it is real, not Klingerman Virus through mail but Anthrax through mail. Either this email hoax gave someone an idea or it is indeed an organized effort.

Either way, I don't think after this that anyone can blame people for staying out of the malls on Halloween (another email warning).

Anthrax - Frequently Asked Questions - Full Text

quote:

Anthrax is most common in agricultural regions where it occurs in animals.

---------------------------------------------------------

It is rare to find infected animals in the United States.

Take that for what it's worth.

Where is anthrax usually found?

Anthrax can be found globally. It is more common in developing countries or countries without veterinary public health programs. Certain regions of the world (South and Central America, Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East) report more anthrax in animals than others.

To be fair, they also state -

Anthrax in wild livestock has occurred in the United States.

This is a bad idea. Doctors are saying not to do this as not all antibiotics will work on it. Also since you would have to take it for 60 full days after you start it and most people won't it could cause the strain to become resistaint and you would be setting yourself up to become more suseptable to other sicknesses.

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
God, I fucking hate these fucking cowardly fuckwads. If you want to fight with us, just come out like fucking men and lets go at it.
No, instead you have to be sneaky fucks who scare and kill innocent civilians and then run away so you can't get caught.

I have no respect for someone who tries to inflict some damage then run like a fucking pussy because they are too cowardly to face America as a whole.

If these cock sucking dickwads want a fucking war, then fuck them all...a war they will have.

OK, I feel better now...sorry guys

--Edit--
Oh yeah, one more thing. If one person tries to tell me that there are reasons for this, that these people who do this are justified in some way, I ask that you come with me to the funerals (oh, wait, sorry...memorials since they can't find the bodies) of two Port Authority cops I know this weekend and explain that to their families.

Yes, I do understand exactly what you mean, TFEC.
I do work in the medical field and all the docs I know are hoarding antibiotics for just this such circumstance. They have been talking about this type of bio warfare for quite some time. I am not one to jump on the antibiotic bandwagon for minute things, like some patients do, but if I feel the need to protect myself I will do so. I thank you for your input, tho. I do appreciate it.
*edit - forgot one thing...the antibiotic for this is called Cipro.
