I've held back on news articles but I mean this is interesting and I want to know like what others think about taking dead actors and putting them in modern films. Should we use technology to place the dead into modern films? Personally, I"m against it, I think we should let the dead be dead. but you know, that's just how i feel about this...

Digital Bruce Lee to star in new movie
By Bob Tourtellotte

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Twenty-eight years after he died, Bruce Lee is still alive and kicking -- at least, in the movies.

South Korea (news - web sites)'s ShinCine Films, headed by filmmaker Chul Shin, said Thursday it will make a $50 million movie that recreates the martial arts star on film using digital, computer-generated images (CGI) and new voice technology.

Lee, who died in 1973, will be a kick-boxing hero in the same style his fans loved in Hong Kong martial arts movies of the 1970s like ``Way of the Dragon.''

In a telephone interview, Shin said the movie's script was still being written, so he did not want to be specific about the story.

``There are many ideas. I cannot, now, choose from all of them,'' Shin said. ``He is always used as the hero, and he has strong charisma. I want to re-create that image, again.''

Shin said he expects ``Dragon Warrior'' to be ready for theaters around the world in about three years.

He added that Lee was a hero of his in his school years, and by making the movie, Lee can again be the same sort of character for a younger generation.

Lee continues to be admired by audiences in Asia, America and Europe. New technology, Shin said, finally allows him to bring Lee's image back to the screen in full force.

Shin described the technology ``totally new'', but it would re-create Lee's image and cause him to interact with live-action actors and actresses. An actor would tape Lee's dialogue, and computer software would change the actor's voice to make it sound like Lee.

ShinCine acquired the rights to Lee's name and likeness from Concord Moon, a company administered by Lee's widow, Linda Lee Cadwell, and Lee's daughter, Shannon Lee.

In a statement for Lee's family, Shannon Lee said they sold the rights because they ``believe in ShinCine's and Mr. Shin's enthusiasm and commitment to making a first rate film.''

Shin founded ShinCine in 1988 and has made some 15 films including current Korean hit ``Wild Beauty'' and 1999's ``Lies.''

Lee was born in San Francisco, but moved to Hong Kong as a kid and was in a number of movies in the late 1940s and 1950s.

In 1966, he landed his first U.S. co-starring role on TV's ''The Green Hornet'' as trusted servant, Kato. But his early impact in Hollywood came as a teacher of martial arts to celebrities like James Coburn.

Returning to Hong Kong in the early 1970s, Lee began making martial arts films and was a huge hit based both on his skills as a kick-boxer and his sense of humor. Movies like 1971's ''Fists of Fury'' and 1973's ``Enter the Dragon,'' which was released after his death, lifted him to cult hero status.

Lee died in July, 1973, in Hong Kong of a brain hemorrhage caused by an allergic reaction to pain killers.

His son, Brandon Lee, followed him into acting and was on the verge of becoming a star in his own right when he, too, suffered an untimely death at age 27, due to an accidental gunshot on a movie set.

GO BIG BLUE!

This is the song that doesn’t end, yes it goes on and on my friend. Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was, but they’ll continue singing it forever just because this is the song that doesn’t end yes it goes on and on my friend. I have mixed feelings about this.

For 5 years, I studied Jun Fan Gung Fu - Jeet Kun Do.
Translation: Jun Fan = Bruce Lee's Chinese name. Gung Fu is a Chinese martial art. Jeet Kun Do means "Way of the Intercepting Fist."

This movie could either be an insult or a tribute depending on how it is done.

One thing they MUST do to make this a good film is hire Guru Dan Inosanto as the fight coordinator and stand in for Bruce Lee. Guru (means master) Inosanto was Bruce Lee's best friend and sparring partner. He is responsible for continuing the the martial art that Bruce Lee invented and formalizing it. He is the only man alive who can perform Bruce Lee's moves exactly the same way he would.

You can see Guru Dan Inosanto in a Steven Seagal movie. Don't remember which one, but the fight was in a pool hall. Guru Dan attacks Seagal with two halves a broken pool stick. (He taught Seagal the moves for that fight seen. His wife instructs Seagal in the weapons art Kali.)

EDIT - Just went to aint-it-cool-news, and they have two test footage clips of a CGI Bruce Lee.

http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=10782

It doesn't seem clear from the articles, but I feel better if this film is 100% CGI like Final Fantasy and NOT a morph like they did for Brandon Lee in The Crow or an attempt to use a human looking CGI interacting with real people.

I know dan inosanto very well but he is not the ONLY one my friend. Lets not forget that lee also trained James Coburn and Steve McQueen along with Kareem Abdul jabbar his style of martial arts known as Jeet Kun Do. So since coburn is too old and kareem doesn't look like bruce, I say make a digital steve mcqueen and .... I don't even know the point anymore.

Fuck it make a digital Steve Mcqueen and make a porno with him and bruce lee called "Enter The Drag Queen"

According to the talkback on AICN those clips are like 5 years old Dent and even if they could make it look seemless and while it would be good to see Lee again, it's not him, it's a computer person made to be him. no matter how good it looks, it will never be the same, never have the 'lee-ness.' And still, he hasn't chosen this project, even if it's excellent, it's still not his choice.

And if you think that letting someone else do moves and put his head over it, let me just remind you of the Chris Reeve superbowl commerical.

Ikea will probably be one of the few who agrees with me on this.

But if you are going to make a digital lee why not finally remaster his two unfinished films? One which is Game Of Death and there is another I forget the name. Now the quality between the two will probably be vast and different but I am sure most people would rather see that remastered with lee in it than some new bullshit movie which lee will have no control over.

Don't Lee directed chinese connection (aka fists of fury in china) and Return of the dragon. He choreographed all the fight scenes and was an intregal part in all of his films and like ikea said, you can recreate his likeness but not him.

Gonz, JKD is a very personalized art. Explaining the difference between the way two different people perform the same technique diffferently is a lot like explaining how two musicians can play the exact same song and do it differently and both ways are good.

If all they want is the technique, they could hire ANY of Guru Dan's senior students from his L.A. school for that. But, to capture Bruce Lee's body language and personal style, they need someone who knew Bruce's moves inside and out to say "yes, that's the way he would do it" or "no, he'd never do it like that."

And Ikea, if it's a 100% CGI film like Final Fantasy, nobody is going to be fooled into thinking "Wow, this is a true Bruce Lee film." No, it would be a tribute the way the movie with Will Smith is a tribute to Mohammad Ali or the movie "Ghandi" was a tribute.

But putting a CGI Bruce Lee with real people or a CGI morph onto someone else's body would be rediculous. Better to make a better version of the biography film or to remake "Enter the Dragon" with Jet Li in the Bruce Lee role.

I understand but it's this line...

That made me think it would be CGI Lee with real people
