***DISCLAIMER***

The following is in no way intended to take away from the human tragedy that occurred on 9/11.

Biscuit

The story that this link will bring you to is one of thousands relating to the tragedy of 9/11, but it is not about human tragedy. Many animals were injured and left behind in the wake of the crashes at the World Trade Centers.

While I have no idea of the numbers involved, this particular one has become close to my heart because not only was this dog rescued from the scene, but also because he was fostered, until recently, just a couple of houses away from me. This is an abbreviated account of Biscuit's story. My hope is that maybe someone here, or someone one of you may know, might be able to help.

Biscuit was recently "returned" to the Humane Society shelter in Forked River, New Jersey. Apparently, he was taken away from his foster home because he got loose and bit a little girl (at least, that's the story the shelter is telling). Biscuit was very hard to keep contained. In the short while he lived in my neighborhood, he often got loose and ran around. On one occasion, my son and I went outside to try to catch him with dog biscuits. He stopped by us, started to approach us, but then just ran away. He had every opportunity to attack us, and didn't. Biscuit is not a bad dog...he has just been through a very traumatic time. I would consider fostering or adopting him, but I already have two pets and don't honestly think I have the time to devote to him to make him feel secure.

I know this is a shot in the dark, but if anyone can help, or knows of anyone who may be able to help Biscuit, please contact me and I will be happy to get any further information you might want. Just for the record, I am not a tree-hugger, nor am I a PETA supporter. I would just hate to see this animal, who has been through so much, be put down.

Thanks for your help.

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

I hear you all the way SA. I just wish I could have been able to help out the ASPCA officers at ground zero in the days and weeks following 9/11.

I am not allowed to have dogs where I live, or I would definitely take him in. Is there a way that he can be taken from the ASPCA shelter and taken to another one that does not euthanize their animals? I would "adopt" him for a bit just to make sure he wasn't put down...but I guess going from home to home can't be too good for him either....poor doggie. (Sorry, I'm a softie when it comes to animals)

Awww, he looks like my puppy-dog... :(

In following up on what FunBags suggested, I found a listing of no-kill shelters in New Jersey; I know it's not ideal to take him from one shelter to another, but it's preferable to just having him put down.

Thanks to all of you who provided serious responses and to those who didn't...thanks for the giggles.

I'm going to check into the "no-kill shelter" that is closest to this one. I asked the Forked River shelter about their sponsor program, which is, I guess, the same idea. The dog is given a permanent home there...as long as it's paid for. Unfortunately, it's $230 per month and the first year needs to be paid in advance.

Again, thanks for your help...and BACK TO THE TOP! :)

I know that Bideawee (sp?) is a no kill shelter look into that. Also there has to be some place willing to help a displaced dog due to 9/11....
