I received this message in an email today (1/22). I don't know how legitiamte the threat is. Some of you more computer savvy folks would know better. Anyway, I followed the instructions and sure enough...there was the file. I followed the instructiions and deleted it. Do what you will and please let me know if anyone knows anything more about this.
quote:

URGENT! Virus Check!

I had this on my hard drive, and since you're in my address book, you
probably have it, too. Follow the instructions; it will only take about
2 minutes and you can get rid of it. Sorry!
~~~~~~
We just received an e-mail that said we might have a virus that is
spread from address book to address book. It is apparently undetectable
by anti-virus software. It remains dormant for about 14 days and then
activates and wipes out the hard drive data. When we checked our hard
drive, we did find the virus and successfully deleted it. Since one of
us has e-mailed you recently, we want to share this message in case you,
too, picked it up.
THE DIRECTIONS FOR REMOVING IT ARE QUITE EASY TO FOLLOW:
1. Go to "start" - then to "find" or "search" (depending on your
computer).
2. In the *search for files or folders box,* type in: sulfnbk.exe as
this is the virus.
3. In the "look in," make sure you're searching Drive C.
4. Hit "search" button (or "find").
5. If this file shows up (it's an ugly blackish icon that will have the
name "sulfnbk.exe"), DO NOT OPEN IT !!!!
6. Right click on the file - go down to delete and left click.
7. It will ask you if you want to send it to the recycle bin - say yes.
8. Go to your desktop (where all your icons are) and double-click on the
recycle bin.
9. Empty the Recycle Bin or right click on sulfnbk.exe and delete again.
If you find it, SEND THIS E-MAIL TO ALL IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK because
that's how it is transferred.
Sorry for the bad news . . . hopefully, you won't find it, or at least
will find it in time to avoid the problems with your hard drive.
Yes, thanks Barch, you beat me to it.
sulfnbk.exe is a utility for repairing long filenames if they get damaged, and is SUPPOSED to be there...
People who delete files off their computer becuase of a "virus warning" but don't check out the legitimacy of the warning via the 50 billion hoax alert websites out there deserve to have their computer erased anyway.
And if you reply to this, Microsoft will be tracking it and run a raffle to give out a free trip to Disney World
I deleted the file already (foolishly). Will I encounter any serious problems? If so, how do I go about restoring the file? I receive updates from windows via the internet on occasion. Will my next update fix this problem (if there is one)? Thanx for any help you provide.
I read the same thing from Barch's link. You said 'damaged' instead of 'corrupted' so I guess you are safe from plaguerism :p
I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?
Or just go to your friend's computer and copy the same file over. I've done this in a pinch with corrupted files (that I can't restore off the OS CD) and never had a problem afterwards.
