On the show today, O&A talked a bit about 9/11 being a holiday next time it comes around. Day off of work/school, the whole nine yards.

Two questions.

Do you think this will happen?

And a little deeper, something I've been pondering with Noelle on IM, what would they call the day?

Just calling it "September 11th" wouldn't work, because as future generations pass, the name is lost because it's just the date. "Terrorist Day" is a bit harsh and wacky. "WTC Day" won't work cause it wasn't just the WTC, "Pentagon/WTC/Pennsylvania Day" is stupid.

So what would it be called?

We really don't have an offical name for the pearl harbor attack. Besides, it would be kinda stupid to stop working for something which almost made us do just that.

I think some sort of national tradition would be nicer.

That was your idea, bub.

Remembrance Day is the only thing I see fitting right now. I think anything with "mourning" in the name would be a bit too heavy. Not too heavy for the situation, but for the country itself. The majority of Americans prefer something on the lighter side, no matter what the occurrence. Wouldn't want to upset any soccer moms.

Edit: September 11th shouldn't be a day off unless the government decides to go and do the same thing for Pearl Harbor.

You do realize there's a world beyond your monitor, right?
Or are pixels the only thing you have control of?

Ok, this whole thread was a cheap ploy to let us all know that you talk to a female via AIM. If I had AIM, I bet I could be a braggart too, LOL

On topic --

I don't think it should be a holiday, I don't think that people should a.) frivoloussly pass the day in the name of the people who were lost or b.) Sit and harp on the events that took place on 9/11/01. I also don't think that the terrorists should be rewarded by affecting our holiday traditions in the name of terrorism. I think they have received too much acknowledgement for what they did. To permanently dedicate a day as a holiday for their actions would not be right IMO.

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

I think that 9/11 should definately not be a holiday. It would truly cheapen the idea and the magnitude of what has taken place.
It would just be in the minds of future kids "Yes! We got a day off tommorow" instead of fully understanding why and what 9/11 really was.
But of course with any monumental tragedy it is hard to relate how many people were effected to future generations.
But thats just my opinion.

I don't think it will be a holiday. It will probably be designated a "day of remembrance", which I would have absolutely no problem with. And to be honest, making it a holiday would only lead to "9/11 holiday" sales all over the place, thus demeaning the whole purpose of the day. 2000 people being killed innocently is not a reason to get 20% off that leather jacket I've been meaning to buy.

Yea, and think about it. All this happened because of the jews > the jews own all the stores > and just like xmas and easter > the jews are the ones who profit in the end.

Xmas and Easter are more of a Jewish holiday than a Christian Holiday.

I think it is all part of the Jewish plan.

Exactly like that, but maybe not in as grand a scale. Not going about our lives because of it - even as a "holiday" lets the terrorists win (I know its been said a million times, but its true)

No way should 9/11 be a holiday, or a day of rememberence, or whatever you want to call it. I cant stand to think of the camel jockeys around the world knowing every year that our nation is remembering what they did to us (and by camel jockeys, I mean "terrorists"). F those sand eaters in the a, and rebuild the trade center with skycrapers full of banks and brokerages and entertainment companies, and porn web sites, and everything that they hate about us. We'll all do a good job remembering in our own way. We dont need to make it a holiday. "Patton" is on so I am a little fired up right now.........

I wouldn't mind it being a special day, Maybe called "911 Day" or somethin. Could be used not really as a holiday for a day off, but an appreciation day to emergency workers.

How about just a "National Rememberance Day" and a moment of silence is observed at 9 AM sharp to honor all of our heros that not only died in the terrorist attacks but at any time working for their country. (Possibly move Labor day to Memorial Day and make 9-11 Memorial day? just a thought)

I don't think it should be but I expect something called like "The National Day of Remembrance" or something.

There is already a petition being circulated throughout the ems, police and fire fighting communities about this(started by one of the children whose father dies in the wtc). They want to make it a day of remembrance for all the people who died that day, but especially the rescue workers... which I am not sure about it being just about them.

The idea of having the day off doesn't seem right. Maybe some sort of a moment of silence would be nice, but if people have the day off they will not think about what happened. How many kids in that were off of school were thinking about MLK on Monday? Probably not too many. 9/11 would just become, in years to come, the last time people go to the beach for the summer.
