Everyone knows many flashes in the pan like Dexy's Midnight Runners, Right Said Fred, and Chumbawumba, but when people talk about them it's usually confined to music.

But what about others in other industries? Sports, TV, O and A guests, Movies, hot chicks, commercially available, the possibilities are endless.

I've gotta go with Hootie and the Blowfish for music. For the simple reason that, they're still together. They had one album sell over 15 million copies. Now their website has an nice interactive map of the globe where you can click on each continent and it will tell you their stops on their current worldwind tour. Every continent you click says "we have no dates in your area at this time". Priceless.

For movies, There's two guys I can think of that really stick out. Vince Vaughn and C Thomas Howell. "Double Down" Trent was one of the great movie characters, and he wrote it. The what did he do, play second fiddle to Jeff Goldblum in Jurrasic Park 2? Now he's making cameos on cheesy Showtime comedies. C Thomas Howell is even worse. He must sit in the corner and cry when everyone gets together for The Outsiders reunions.

Kirstie Alley was retardedly hot for a couple seasons during Cheers, and then it just went away. I've never seen a hot chick become such a pig in so short a time. I think someone cast a spell on her.

In Sports, there are shitloads, but the one that jumps out at me (being local) is Fred Lynn. In 1975, the guy was Rookie of the Year and MVP at 23 years old. He then managed to play for another 15 years, and do absolutely nothing for anyone. He was just your run of the mill outfielder except for 1975 and then had another flash of greatness a few years later only to fall again.

What are some others?

Don and Mike. Their one hit... Washington.

Philly also had this quaterback a few years ago, Bobby Hoying (I think). He was supposed to kick ass and he might have had a few good games, but he sucked.

The band Hum had that really cool song "Stars", and now they are no where to be found.

wow this is a pretty good topic.. i know it is your opinion, but i do have to disagree with you on vince vaughn. he has appeared in a lot of movies since "swingers", and is actually considered one of the best young actors in hollywood.
anyways, I think one of the worst one hit (or 2 hit wonders) is that home alone kid, Macaulay Kulkin.. once his little kid thing wore off, he was done for. never to be seen again, except for an off broadway play he is doing.
In most recent years, for sports ,i saw Danny Weurfel, quaterback. this kid was unstoppable in college and every team wanted him, and i havent heard a damn thing about him in years.
another sports figure , believe it or not , i think is Anna Kournikova. yeah, she is one hot piece of ass, but she got famous from playing tennis. she was great her rookie year, and now, in her 5th or 6th year of playing, she has i think only one tour win in her whole carreer. if she wasnt as hot as she is, we would hear nothing of her.

What about that band the New Radicals? Didn't the lead singer go nuts and lock himself in the basement?
Sports: Olympian Anthony Nesty: First Gold Medal For Surinam, Swimmer, disappeared off the face of the earth.
Hollywood: Have to say The young priest from the Exorcist. (I forgot his name) After this he made a movie about his pulitzer prize winning play "That Championship Season" which flopped and he ended up being the town drunk of Scranton and taught Drama at the University there. He had some minor roles over the years (the old coach in Rudy) but that was it. He died last year, of a heart attack.

The TV show Men Behaving Badly. Thatfirst season was awsome then the guy from ER and the Girl from Family Ties Left and it sucked. They should release that season on dvd.

Yeah, I know that Vince Vaughn has done other stuff like Psycho, Return to Paradise, and the aforementioned Rudy, but he hasn't done anything big.

Swingers was huge maybe not comercially, but critically and now everyone's seen it and loves him in it. Just look at what Ben Affleck and Matt Damon made out of the same situation. Where the hell are Favreau and Vaughn?

I also forgot about Mark Fidrych from the late 70s. He had one of the greatest rookie seasons for a pitcher, and was out of baseball like 5 years later. Buster Douglas, Margot Kidder (did she have a job between Superman and when she was roaming around someone's backyard with no teeth some 20 years later?), Gary Hart are a few others.

Actually their follow-up album was supposed to be excellent. They were just not promoted well. I believe that was in part due to the mergers in the music industry. I know for a fact that Duff McKagan's (ex G'n'r Bassist) excellent solo cd 'Beautiful Disease' was effed over due to the mergers. But you are correct in the fact that 'stars' was their only hit. They are the classic one-hit wonder.

In the film world, I would have to go with Quentin Tarantino. Sure he had 2 hits and wrote 2 other great movies 'Natural Born Killers' and 'True Romance,' but in my opionion 'Jackie Brown' sucked ass and now he is nowhere to be found. I guess he will try and make himself out to be a Kubric or some shit and release a movie every 10 years. That's just as shitty as Pink Floyd and bands like that who release new shit every 7 or 8 years.

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

I always thought that Gilby Clarke's solo effort was the best off all the ex GnR guys, including the new G n R stuff.

Which one? He has had a few.

Besides, the best solo effort from the G'n'R camp is from Izzy. Izzy Stradlin and the JuJu Hounds (1992) that featured an ex-Georgia Satellite. I haven't heard the Duff cd 'Beautiful Disease' in it's entirety, but I still know that The first Izzy effort is by far the most consistent through and through effort from all the solo efforts. Of course that is my opinion.

For music, my vote would be for Color-Me-Bad, these guys were like the experiment before the Backdoor Boys. Remember them at the MTV music awards saying "we're gonna be around forever"? >Flush< no more CMB. Classic.

I'd agree with Slash that Jackie Brown sucked royally. Best line was Sam Jackson doing the AK47 bit. Otherwise the movie blew ass.

Personally, I happen to enjoy tracking one-hit wonders along actress lines. Look at Tia Carrere - she went for uberbabe in Wayne's World and True Lies to some rinky dink Relic Hunter show. It's only a matter of time before she hopefully slides into B-grade soft porn...

OK, so Tarantino is going for the Scorsese route. Using the same actors like Deniro (ughhh there is a shoulda been a one hit wonder but something went terribly wrong) and Pesci type of thing. Same actors / actresses in every flick. I thought he was going to be the director that the baton was handed off to. The fucker dropped it!

A Bronx tale was one of the best movies that Deniro was in, but basically anyone could have played his part.

Goodfellas
Deer Hunter
Awakenings
The Fan
Cape Fear
Godfather 2. Says like 5 words of english the whole movie, and still pulls off an amazing job.

He is an amazing actor. Analyze This sucked complete ass in my book. Meet the Parents was ho-hum. Bronx Tale was good, but Deniro was the straight man, so Slash is right, anyone probably could have played that.

But not the above movies. All based on Deniro's ability to pull off greatness.

Goodfellas - Ray Liotta bad accent and all was much better.
Deer Hunter - I can remember B rated horror movies as a kid that stuck with me better than that.
Awakenings - Ho Hum
The Fan - Suuuhuucked!
Cape Fear - Good job, but could have been done by other's just as well.
Godfather 2 - Godfather movies do absolutely nada for me.

You forgot Raging Bull. My answer to Raging Bull is Rocky III.

...and Taxi Driver was overrrated shit too. That was a huuuuuugggeee letdown!

I wasn't talking about the value of the movies. I was talking about his job in them.

I never saw Raging Bull so I can't comment.

Yes, I didn't think that Deer Hunter was that good, Awakenings was gay, The Fan sucked, but he was great in them. Have you ever tried to act? It's not as easy as it looks. Everyone watches B movies soap operas and are just shocked that people can actually act that poorly. but it's not that easy to manufacture vastly different emotions one after another on the spot and do so for 20 straight takes.

What he does is amazing.

Why does this argument seem fimiliar?

You tell me that nothing matters, You're just fucking scared
You tell me that I'm better, You just hate yourself
You tell me that you like her, You just wish you did
You tell me that I make no difference, Well at least I'm fucking trying
What the fuck have you done?
