Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | Is it merely coincidence that change has yet again set forth on the OA.com message board? A short time ago the board took a similar turn. A lot of members said “this happens all of the timeâ€, “the board goes in cyclesâ€. Well, most of those people are gone now, and it seems that the change is permanent, at least until the next change. So, it seems it is time to re-evaluate some things here. The entire history of the board has been taken from us. Are we bound to repeat it? Probably. However, I see a new time is upon us. Many of the frequent posters these days really have no idea about the old days of the board. Shit, I myself have only been on the board a short time. These new people can’t be expected to understand what happened before they came here. There are no longer archives, upon archives for them to read and re-read. Gone are the days of “A Day in the Life of Upuauatâ€, “Ground Control†and the like. We are creating a new history of OA.com. And, so far, I am not completely convinced we are doing such a good job of it. I understand that there will be a new adoption program starting soon, and I hope that it will be taken relatively seriously. I hope that newbies will come aboard and become productive members of the board. I hope that veterans (those who understand the board, not just those who’ve been here for a while) will guide these newbies on their way. I feel that with the exception of a few wayward posters, the adoption program worked pretty well the first time around. I hope it will work even better this time. Our community seems to be falling apart a bit here. Let’s take it, and make it whole again. On a lighter note: The horribly gruesome (and fun) act of flaming newbies should continue, but maybe to a lesser degree.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Evolution not Revolution. Lets work together people. But I must say KID, with the uncontrollable growing population of the board (that was once a small community and is now a tiny city) there is a price of anarchy. We all have to learn to tolerate eachother, for the good of the board.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | As the saying goes K1d, "those who can not remember the past are condemned to repeat it" Fortunately, there are enough of us around who do have an idea of some of the things that went on that hopefully we will be prepared to handle things. As for the new adoption program, I believe it will work out well. The last one seriously cut down on blatant newbie bashing. Once a new poster was adopted, instead of getting relentlously tooled on, he/ she was kindly directed to contact his/ her mentor for immediate advice. Not to mention, the mentors got tooled for having an "uppity newbie". I have faith that we can "right the ship" and get back to having the best damn message board anywhere, 24/7. Say hello to my little friend(s)!

Besides, if ever there is syndication, imagine how huge this place will get..... then we'll really need adoption programs. Say hello to my little friend(s)! O&A Board Regular Registered: Jul. 00 | I love threads like this that take some sort of introspective look at the board as an entity. I'm serious. I sat around with a friend on the board the other night and we had a long conversation about the social structure of the board and how it differs from 'real' communities. It's all very interesting from a sociological perspective. But, from my perspective as one of the 'elders' I don't think we need to be worrying about the board right now. I was kind of suprised by Fez's thread in GD because I don't really see the problems he says are here. The board is a very friendly and vibrant place, all things considered. I think the board has finally hit it's stride and had overcome all the growing pains. The mods are doing a great job, to the man and woman. People are having fun and that's all that matters in the long run. I mean, there seems to be a lack of any real conversation about Opie and Anthony, but nobody seems to want that, so...what are you gonna do? I don't really see the newbie bashing that everybody is concerned about. Sure, there are a fair share of 'dillons' but that is just plain funny. And, a dillon is like gentle ribbing...not bashing. But, maybe I'm just talking out of my ass...

Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Kid, very well put. But if I may indulge... The old board was great and a lot of fun. It's gone now save for the memories of a few of the veterans and moderators. That is the past where it should stay. Rather than mourn the loss of history, perhaps it is time to create NEW history. All this moaning just brings the tone down. Remember we're here to have fun and bullshit about two DJ's who tell dick jokes for a living. Lighten up, and lets not let the memory of the old board bog down the way we post. We can never be IP, CBH, Upuauat or even dolphin touchers. We can only be ourselves. Thanks for your time and courtesy. This message was edited by hellspawn warrior on 3-11-01 @ 11:00 PM

Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | quote: Hellspawn, I didn't mean to come across as complaining. I merely wanted to say that it is time we embrace our new home. quote: I also did not intend to bring the mood down. I wanted to say that we have the chance to make a great thing here, and we should. quote: True. However, we have to remember that they were an integral part of this board once. Those people provided us with endless topics of conversation, something that has been lacking here recently. I am not saying the board can't go on without them. Only that we need to be more pro-active in making this a fun place to kill time. The more people that post, the more gooder. But, within limits. We don't need 5 threads about the same thing. We don't need 10 threads of newbies gettin' bashed. (Although the occasional newbie bashing is required) What we need is coherent people posting frequently. People can't be afraid to post, but they must think before they do so. With a little work on our part, we can make this place as fun as it once was. This is my attempt to align our people with a common goal. I love this place, but lately it's been rather lame.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jul. 00 | OPM: what exactly makes it suck to be a newbie? I'm not trying to give you shit, I'm really curious. Maybe I don't see it. I mean, after the initial getting to know how it all works stage, to people really treat you different? I know I get treated a little different than the majority of people on this board, but I want to know what it's like so I can try to impact change if it's needed. And, by the way, if the OPM in your name refers to the band OPM, then I will personally take care of any problems you are having.

Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Kid, I agree. The first step is to remove the intimidation factor in posting. I don't mean candyland "welcomes" but ease up the reins a little. I can't wait for the mentoring program to return. I hope to be an active contributor. Kingpins threads also allows anyone shy to post without fear of impunity. It's a simple matter of getting the hang of it. Side note: Thanks to the mod for the status, I hope I can live up to it. This message was edited by hellspawn warrior on 3-11-01 @ 11:31 PM

Psychopath Registered: Mar. 01 | 1st- why would I have problems if my name refers to the band OPM (which it does)? Do you mean that you could help me with my drug addiction? ;) lol j/k, I just like the music. 2nd- it sucks being new 'cause you don't know anybody and most of the inside jokes. People say stuff like "you're just a hanger-on so shut the f*ck up".

And, my advice to you, ignore the deeks and try to learn about the inside jokes, and in no time you will be an oldbie...it's like anywere else in life....people will get to know you and you will get to know people...plus, with the word 'chick' in your screenname, I'm sure you'll have no problem making friends....

Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | I never really had much of a problem either. A few bumps in the road, a brain fart on posting a new thread without researching similiar threads first, but generally a smooth transition. The main reason it has been so easy is this; before hitting the reply to topic button, I wait a minute. I check typos and punctuation, then I read the reply (or new topic ) and ask if it makes a difference in the thread. Is it funny, interesting or topical ? If yes I hit reply, if no I delete it. We all have our time in the barrel eventually, its how we handle it that makes the difference.
