The much talked about documentary of a firefighter that turned into the filming of the events of 9/11 is going to be aired on cbs during March. Here is the article...

quote:

NEW YORK (The Hollywood Reporter) --- They set out to film a documentary but ended up shooting history, and next month CBS will air the never-before-seen footage from the brothers Naudet of what happened at Ground Zero when two planes struck the World Trade Center on Sept. 11.

On March 10, CBS will air a two-hour special in primetime that will capture the events as seen through the eyes of firefighters who were stationed next to the WTC. Those who have seen the video have described it as "dramatic" and "awesome," an extraordinary eyewitness to history and a real-time account -- much of it quite moving -- of the events that stunned the country and the world that morning.

The story of Gedeon, 31, and Jules Naudet, 28, has been recounted in the media in recent weeks. An interview with the pair runs in the March issue of Vanity Fair, on newsstands.

The filmmakers had been following probationary firefighter James Hanlon on his rounds for a documentary they were making after the New York City Fire Department had given the award-winning filmmakers access to a downtown New York ladder company.

Four months after their filming started, Jules heard a roar one morning, aimed a camera upward and captured the horrific crash of the first plane as it slammed into the WTC's North Tower. As the brothers rushed to Ground Zero, they shot the chaotic scene, including 45 minutes of intense footage from inside the North Tower as firefighters and police officers rushed in to rescue people during the minutes before the building collapsed.

"They were in the middle of this for hours," said Jim Wiatt, president and co-chief operating officer of WMA, which brought the untitled project to CBS.

All the proceeds from the broadcast and subsequent uses of the footage will go to the Uniformed Firefighters Assn. Scholarship Fund to assist the children of the firefighters who perished in the terrorist attacks. The broadcast will include information on how people can contribute to the fund.

Susan Zirinsky, executive producer of CBS' "48 Hours," will oversee the shaping of the show as executive producer, though it is not officially a product of CBS News.

But only six months removed from the tragedy, the question is whether Americans are ready to look at the footage. Will it be too graphic a reminder of one of the most painful episodes in recent times? Zirinsky says no.

"It is inspiring and important but not hard to watch," she said. "It's powerful. It's not hard to watch; it's just mesmerizing."

People close to the project said the tape was not gory but that there were moving scenes of firefighters who entered the building and did not get out alive.

"The audience will come away with a perspective that has never been seen before inside Ground Zero as well as the journeys of brothers, the firemen," Zirinsky said. "This is such a unique piece of work. It just allows people to sit back and take a breath, six months after, and really look with awe at the inside story of Ground Zero."

How the show ended up in CBS' hands is a testimony to networking and the special nature of relationships in the television business.

The Naudets' father came to Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, with whom he had a professional relationship. Carter called Wiatt, a close friend of his. The pair (along with Ben Silverman, the agency's head of international development) went to another close friend, CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves, who -- along with CBS News president Andrew Heyward -- championed the project inside the network.

"They got the news division to make it more focused for the network," Wiatt said. "It was under Les'aegis from that point on."

"Moonves wanted to air it as soon as we could," Zirinsky said, adding that the March 10 airdate --
almost six months to the day after the attacks -- is a coincidence.

CBS, which is contributing all of the proceeds from the broadcast to the firefighters fund, will pay the Naudets to finish the project. The network will air the program once, after which the Naudets will focus on international distribution as well as making a longer version for home video and DVD, according to sources close to the project. They also will finish making their three-hour documentary about the ladder company.

When informed of the video footage, some firefighter groups had qualms about how it would be used. On Tuesday, Pete Gorman, president of the Uniformed Fire Officers Assn., said he might express informal concerns to CBS.

"My problem is that some families might view it (and) that it might be a troubling situation," Gorman said, adding that he had not seen the video and he wanted to talk to those who had before deciding what to do next.

But Zirinsky said the network had been in touch with a woman who "sort of represents the families, and everybody knows we're doing this. There have been no issues," she noted. In fact, she said the families were pleased because the special will raise money for the scholarship fund, which is why the project is technically under the corporate umbrella rather than the news division.

NBC said it will air its own special looking back the WTC attacks but declined further comment. ABC also declined comment on its plans.

CBS will air the show from 9-11 p.m. ET. CBS News senior vp Betsy West will serve as executive-in-charge, and Carter and Vanity Fair editor of creative development David Friend also will be executive producers of the broadcast.

What does everyone think of this? Is America, a nation that has been trying to go on with life since September 11, ready to be thrusted back into it? Im sure it will be a ratings bonanza but does that make it right? or is there even anything wrong with it at all? After all, I was in a toy store the other day and I saw a puzzle commemorating the 60th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, a puzzle of all things. and most of all, will you watch it? I dont know if I will or not. It is a part of our history so I will probably watch it until its over or it becomes too much for me to handle, whichever comes first, but what about the rest of you. What do you think?

I think I'll watch it. It seems like it might be a way to get ratings up, but maybe it'll be good for us all. In wars past, we had drafts it kept people constantly thinking about what was going on. With how this war is set-up, it is very easy to ignore. The nation is at war, not the president, not the army. The entire nation. Maybe it'll remind people why we are doing what we are doing and keep alive that fire that makes us want to eliminate terrorism.

I think if they showed this the week after the attacks it would have had bigger ratings than the SuperBowl.

The need of the public to "move on" is always overruled by their curiosity.

I will watch it. I don't know if it's being callousness, or not, but I just have some driving need to know everything there is to know about this attack and everyone that was involved in it.

If CBS says it is time to see a documentary about the WTC tragedy, who am I to argue? I gotta look at the damn site everyday anyway. Fuck it.

I don't know how close anyone is here to what happened (directly or indirectly), but since I actually saw this go down from the SI Ferry on my way to work, not to mention that I work downtown, I'll probably watch it. That whole week was numbing for me, and thank God neither I nor anyone I know was lost in the attack. I think its important for people to watch, even though no amount of footage is enough to really give a person the perspective of what was happening unless they were actually there as it happened. I just hope it's done tastefully and respectfully in regards to the victims and their families.

Well, look what they did to the Superbowl! I think that, at least with this documentary, people who watch it will be making the choice to be thrust back into it. At halftime, during the U2 show, I wanted to cry. I was angry that they took an American pasttime - our frickin' entertainment, the stuff that helps us get our minds off of the shit in our everyday lives - and used it to remind us of it all.

will you watch it?

I will probably check it out because I like to hear personal stories and hear from people who have been through tragedy. You never know when you will be that close, and knowing how it is, in my opinion, better prepares you.

As someone who actually worked at the WTC i will find it tough to watch. While seeing all that i missed inside the building, thankfully, does raise my curiousity, I don't know if i could handle it. I have a feeling i might breakdown. Just today i was flipping channels and landed on 60 minutes II, and they had a story on a ems guy. I wanted to watch it, but i got a huge knot in my stomach. The same thing when I tried to watch the TLC also tonight. I have a feeling that the same thing will happen with the CBS Program. I will probably have someone tape it for me, maybe a few years down the road i might me able to watch it all the way through.

As for the U2 thing, It was and is the right thing to do. We forget things too easily. To remind ourselves may help preventa future occarance. It was also neat to know that someone else besides me and the people's friends and family remeber the people who lost there lives.

I'll definitely watch. The Metro channel had a documentary about the towers on one day that I really enjoyed-- dont know what it was called. I'm actually going down to ground zero on Sunday..anyone familiar with this new "ticket system" they've employed to get on the platform?

I'm too lazy to make a sig.

I may come off sounding like an ass, but honestly the way I see it, if it's too soon for some people, then they just shouldn't watch it instead of watching and complaining.

I don't know if I will be able to watch it. I listened to the screams for help of people trapped inside the building, the screams of firefighters trapped as their rigs were being crushed. I have seen the video footage of the first plane hitting Tower 2. I tremble when I see it. The video footage of the second plane hitting Tower 1 makes me shiver. I think it is a little premature for the networks to be showing this until the Pile (As it is called by many in the emergency services) is cleared out and the families of those lost can have some closure. There are over 1200 people, I believe, whose remains have not been found, along with a few of my friends. Once it is all removed and those people can be properly laid to rest, then maybe I can bring myself to watch it. If the video isn't enough, to really drive home the horror of that day...one of these days the Police and Fire Departments should release the audio tapes of the callers calling into 911 and the radio traffic during the first hour and then the radio traffic up to and maybe an hour after the collapse of both towers. Then people will truly get a sense of what happened that day.

It ain't easy being greasy in a world full of cleanliness and you know, all that other madness.
