Leesburg, Va. (AP) - One of the suspects in the killing of a prominent scientist allegedly claims to be a practicing vampire who went into a frenzy after getting some blood in his mouth.

That was among the gruesome details heard in a Leesburg courtroom today, as an investigator discussed the confession of 18-year-old Kyle Hulbert -- one of four suspects charged with murdering Robert Schwartz.

At a preliminary hearing, the court heard that Hulbert allegedly said Schwartz's daughter was afraid her father was trying to poison her. Nineteen-year-old Clara Schwartz is also under arrest on murder charges.

According to the testimony, Hulbert used a two-foot sword to kill the renown DNA expert in his Loudoun County farmhouse in December.

Leesburg, Va. (AP) - Police said a teen-ager with a history of mental illness confessed to the sword slaying of a prominent scientist, saying fantasy creatures gave him permission to kill the man in order to protect a friend.

Authorities made public Friday a statement in which Kyle Hulbert, 18, of Millersville, Md., said he believed biophysicist Robert M. Schwartz, 57, was trying to kill his own daughter - Hulbert's friend - by lacing lemons with sulfuric acid and poisoning her pork chops.

Hulbert, who has been diagnosed as schizophrenic and treated in psychiatric hospitals, said he was angered by 19-year-old Clara Jane Schwartz's accounts of her father's abuse.

The pair had been friends since meeting in October at the Maryland Renaissance Festival.

"I have always told Clara that I would protect her," Hulbert wrote.

He said the final straw came after Clara Schwartz allegedly claimed her father wanted to make "sure she did not come back" from a family trip, according to Hulbert's Dec. 12 statement.

"That was all I could take," he wrote.

The teenager said vampires and creatures named Ordog, Sabba and Nicodemus then gave him permission for the Dec. 8, 2001, slaying to protect his "closest, most dear friend."

Hulbert said after he stabbed Schwartz with a 27-inch sword at the scientist's rural farmhouse, he drank his victim's blood and went "into a frenzy."

Along with Hulbert, Clara Schwartz, Michael Pfohl, 21, and Katherine Inglis, 19, are awaiting trial on first-degree murder charges. The four have told police they shared a devotion to fantasy realms dominated by vampires and witchcraft.

Schwartz's mother, Mary, called it "absolutely absurd" that he would try to poison his daughter - and incomprehensible that Clara Schwartz would help plan the slaying.

"I wish I could just black it all out," she told The Washington Post.

Lawyers for the defendants declined to comment, or did not return calls.

Relatives of Schwartz said he was devoted to his three adult children.
