740 Pound NJ Woman Rescued
Mar. 19, 2002 9:58 am
DOVER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- Emergency workers and firefighters lashed together several stretchers and dismantled the front door of a house to remove a 740-pound woman who was having difficulty breathing.
Carol Terpay, 59, remained in intensive care Tuesday at Community Medical Center in Toms River, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Officials said Terpay fell in and out of consciousness during the 90 minutes it took to extricate her from her Ortley Beach home.
First aid workers and firefighters lashed together three stretchers, slid them under Terpay's mattress and dragged the woman to the front door, officials said.
Part of an enclosed porch was dismantled and several bushes, a tree and a neighbor's fence were removed to clear a path to the door for an ambulance.
One firefighter sprained his shoulder using a chain saw to cut away bushes.
Neighbors said Terpay has been bedridden for years and had a caretaker who looked after her.
