| Hanger-On Registered: Oct. 00  | Hey, you know that electoral college thing system they make us use in an election year? Well, how come we still use it? It's totally antiquated. Hell, the entire Congress is obsolete. Imagine if we set up a computer network with terminals in various local public offices. We could set up permanant terminals in or around the very same places that we go to vote now. It would become possible for every registered voter to vote on any issue. We could give every issue that invokes enough interest by using online petitions, and then giving them one week on a constantly changing ballot, so that people could go and vote every day. More than half of our eligible voting pool does not vote. One of the most oftenly given reasons for people not voting is because they don't feel that their vote really matters. This is true to a large extent. The Congressmen who are responsible for making these decisions for us, often have their own best interests in mind, and not those of the people they are paid to represent. And so, we could take the power back and make our own decisions. I think this would lead to many beneficial results. Examples include a more hands-on democracy and a more politically aware public. What does it all mean? | ||||

And that's not not to mention the government behind the government but that's another theory for a different time. But the point is- democracy is GREAT in theory but not in implementation. The electoral college still works for the same reason it wasa originally adopted. If each person's individual vote counted egually then there would be no reason for the government to a god damn thing for rural areas of the country. There would be no incentive for politicians to give a flyin' fuck about areas that are not very densely populated. Keep NYC & LA happy and fuck the rest of the country and you'll win every election.
