Davis was once known as McGruff the Crime Dog. At the Holmdel Police Department, the 16-year police veteran twice received distinguished service medals. But on the Internet, using nicknames including "Mr. Right" and "Robocop," Davis was a man seeking sex with young children, Monmouth County Prosecutor John Kaye said yesterday. Davis, 42, was accused of soliciting undercover officers posing as children online. He was charged with attempted sexual assault, luring, endangering the welfare of a child and possession of child pornography. There is no evidence he had improper contact with any children, authorities said. Arrested Tuesday, Davis posted $100,000 bail and was released. He has been suspended with pay from the Holmdel force pending an administrative hearing, police said. Holmdel police Capt. Raymond Wilson said the department declined to comment. Kaye said that during the yearlong investigation, Holmdel police made sure not to assign Davis any duty that would put him near children. David Anderson Jr., an Ocean County Sheriff's Office detective trained by the FBI in tracking online predators, said he began communicating with Davis while posing as a 13-year-old Brick girl on a teen Internet chat site. Monmouth County officials already had initiated an investigation, based on a tip from the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, and asked Anderson to help out. "He was engaging in sexual conversation with children and trying to lure them" into meetings, Anderson said. "He was grooming me to meet me to have sex. Those conversations were very sexual in nature." Anderson said Davis was well aware that he was dealing with children. "Davis asked me, 'How old are you?' I said '13.' And then I asked, 'Is that too young?' And he said, 'No, that's not too young,' " Anderson said. When Davis asked Anderson to call him, the sheriff's office enlisted a female officer who looked and sounded young, police said. That officer called Davis while surveillance officers watched him in his home, Anderson said. Those conversations, Anderson said, were "very lewd. His interests were apparent from the beginning." A Monmouth County detective also had online conversations with Davis. Both the online and telephone conversations were recorded for use as evidence, police said yesterday. Photo asked for, sent After Davis asked for a picture of the fictional 13-year-old girl, Anderson said detectives sent him pictures of the female detective, made up to look like school pictures. But last summer, the female detective attended a training conference on hostage negotiations and saw Davis there, Kaye said. The detective left, and so did Davis, and he stopped accessing the America Online account he had been using, Kaye said. "We believed the case was over, and all the data would have been destroyed," Kaye said. "(Davis) is very good at computers, is highly intelligent and has a refined sense of danger." Kaye said detectives raided Davis' apartment on Kimberly Court in Middletown on Tuesday. Detective William Wei, a computer specialist in Kaye's office, was able to recover numerous child pornography pictures from Davis' computer and disks, he said. Kaye declined to say what prompted the raid. As detectives searched Davis' house, he was arrested at Holmdel headquarters, Kaye said. Anderson said catching a man like Davis makes him feel he helped make the world a little safer. "If there aren't any real kids that got hurt, that makes me very happy," Anderson said. "That means the real victims were home safe in bed." | ||||
