FU Austin..first you don't get my obscure Flatliners reference, now I've been lying in bed for a half hour thinking about this afterlife shit. :-D

Reincarnation is a great concept on paper..especially if you're like me and live every day of your awful life wishing you could just hit a 'rewind' button and start over again -to be the kind of person I imagine myself as, or just something completely different altogether.

But the reality is that once you're dead, you're dead. Death is simply an eternal sleep. Hence the phrase, 'Rest in Peace'. If you are reincarnated right after you die, how can you ever rest in peace? If all death is is "starting over again" with a new life, are you ever really resting?

Something else I've been thinking about is genes and chromosomes and DNA and all that biology crap*. How can you explain reincarnation when each person born is basically just a collection of genes, passed down from generation to generation. Offspring share several physical, social, and, well, biological characteristics with their parents/relatives. This suggests to me that we are all just basically made up of whatever funky shit goes on during fertilization. Nothing more, nothing less. No soul. No spirit. No aura. No dead dude reincarnating himself into some random body.

tangent time...
This also got me thinking about existence in general.. This is all very hard to explain or put into words, but I have nothing better to do, and I just don't know any better. so I'll give it a shot anyway...

Several years ago I'd occasionally think to myself: 16 (or however old I was at the time) years ago, somebody was born, and it was me...ME! ME! What would have happened if I were never born? (I'll save you the time: I'D NEVER HAVE TO READ THIS INANE POST. There.) It's fascinating to just think what the world would be like if you were never in it. Not in an egotistical, self-centered way, but in the sense that you just wouldn't exist. There would be no YOU. All your thoughts, your experiences, the knowledge you've gained, would have never been. Your name, birth date, social security number, your BODY, would all mean nothing because it just wouldn't BE. There is no YOU. I think what makes this so hard to fathom is the fact that we're so used to just living our lives, that we don't think about the possibility of never having this life to live. From the day you're born, your heart starts beating, all your biological functions start working, and they don't stop until you're dead. This is all taken for granted - and rightfully so. It's just amazing if you stop to think about how ridiculously complex a human being is and all the shit that goes on inside you without you ever knowing it. Human beings will never ever ever ever ever come even close to figuring out every single thing there is to know about how the human body works.

Also, what if my parents had conceived me a few days before or after they actually did. Would I even exist then? Or would those extra days and that different batch o' spunk produce a different gene code, producing different DNA, producing a different person altogether, and not me?

bah that's it for now. sorry, it's been a while since i've rambled like this.
Great. Now I get to have less than 5 hours of sleep. Actually 4 is more like it, after I spend another half hour laying down thinking about this. Oh well, hopefully I just won't wake up this time.

oh yeah..
*i'm an idiot when it comes to biology. I had to take the regents twice, and that was over 5 years ago. If there is any inaccurate, stupid, Spaz-sounding, or downright WRONG information/statenents in this post, now you know why.

I've always thought that you keep coming back until you can get it right.

Once you do the ultimate reward is being able to remember each and every life you lived.

And then you turn into vanilla pudding.

I mean, who doesn't like vanilla pudding?

I have a good friend who just happens to be a dirty fucking Jew. He told me once upon a time that a large sect of Judaism believes that Heaven is sitting in the presence of God, and studying the Torah.

Now I don't know about you, but that sounds like a really shitty heaven to me.

I've got high hopes for an afterlife. I think reincarnation would be even better. But I believe and fear that it all just ends.

It wasn't lies, it was just...bullshit.

Philosopher's for centuries believed there was a mind/body duality;then in the late 1940's,Ryles disputed this, calling the mind (soul) a nonexistant "ghost in the machine".According to him,all consciousness results from the action of the meat called your brain;there is no mind or soul.

My personal opinion is that people who believe in them exists a indestructible soul live on;the rest become only worm food.CHOOSE WISELY!

Ya know, I've thought about that before...it would be so hard to pinpoint all the effect and indirect relationships and direct relationships to things happening and the effects on people. I've tried...and only wound up with a headache.

I don't know about coming back here for another shot, but I do believe that when we die we move onto some other plane of existence - one that we cannot understand at this stage of the game. I mean yeah, it's the easy wat to explain the unexplainable, but it's too depressing for me to think that all my life expreiences will be for nought the day I kick the bucket. That makes me think "well, why bother living life", and I've been down that road already (not a pleasant time for me).

I like to believe in a soul, but not like an angel with wings or anything, just a prescence - and it's this prescence that lives on, carrying our life experience from this life to that next plane of existence, where/whatever that might be. I just hope that if there is another "level" that I get to meet up with my dad who passed on much to early, and whom I've really missed - especially over the past few years. I'm not an atheist, but I'm not a firm believer in a heaven and hell, at least not in the traditional sense of the two places.

Of course, we could all be like light bulbs - once we burn out, wer'e done for good.

The line between fantasy and reality is the same as that between sanity and insanity...which side of the line are you on?
